Following up on his 2006 documentary, The Most Hated Family in America, Louis Theroux returns to Topeka, Kansas, for a week-long visit with the Westboro Baptist Church.
He again joins the Phelps family on their controversial pickets where they try to antagonise communities with offensive slogans and anti-gay placards. But five years on from Louis’s last visit, there are signs of disarray in the Phelps clan. A series of defections of family members has shaken up the church.
I wonder if I’d like them more if they could sing better …. well, maybe not.
I love Louis Theroux’s documentaries! YouTube’s got a TED Talk by a former Westboro member who got the heck out of Topeka, Kansas, which is well worth the watch.
Wish I could say I’m immune to cultish influences, but I’ve teetered on the edge twice …. I was lucky that they weren’t blood-curdling, weird cults, but they did consider themselves purer and smarter than other people. I guess I was lucky in another way, too, because somehow I “deprogrammed” myself. I’m so happy to be mainstream and average now.
A pretty good follow up, could have been better. I gave it 8/10 stars. I highly recommend part 1. Its all so crazy and entertaining. I love to hate them.

I agree with St.Clare, that passive resistance is the most appropriate approach. The more people push, the harder this group will push back. I think that fear is a strong motivator for their emotionally disconnected behaviors and that mental illness can compound fearful behavior. I think this is especially so in a collective group setting. I believe that their behaviors are symptoms – just as pain is a symptom of a broken limb. I feel that the painkiller in their instance , ideally, is therapy with clinical psychologists. However, for the rest of society the painkiller is passive resistance. I urge you to effectively turn a blind eye, regardless of how passionately you disagree with their ideologies and emotional abuse.

I think they act as they do in an attempt to suppress every aspect of the human condition – which sure would explain why they talk about sex so much! But I think people are going about resisting the WBC in the wrong way entirely. Look at how the increased backlash has made them act, they are pretty literally going crazy in the glow of attention. The more people holla’ back, the more they feel like they’re doing the right thing. If you see a picket on the street, the best surefire way to both piss them off and unsettle them in their views would be to walk past with your headphones on, never acknowledging them more than saying ‘Okay cool.’ and walking off halfway through one of their tantrums. Passive resistance is the best way with these people, the way I see it.

In each of Louis’ documentaries about the WBC, I continue to think that EVENTUALLY, those older daughters of Shirley Phelps will break away from the church and start to live normal lives. Aside from the fact that they were raised with a completely wacko ideology, they are nice, intelligent, and reasonably attractive women. They would do very well in the “real world”. And they continue to show signs that they aren’t completely down with the program.
