What do Danish cartoons tell us about contemporary democracy?

A lot it seems. Freedom of expression has always been a core principle of democracy. Imagining one without the other is unthinkable to most people. But what happens when one democratic right infringes on the rights of others? Is democracy itself shaped by religion? Are religions democratic? More importantly, is God democratic?

Bloody Cartoons is a documentary about how and why 12 drawings in a Danish provincial paper could whirl a small country into a confrontation with Muslims all over the world. He asks whether respect for Islam combined with the heated response to the cartoons is now leading us towards self-censorship. How tolerant should we be, he wonders, of the intolerant. And what limits should there be, if any, to freedom of speech in a democracy.

The director films in Lebanon, Iran, Syria, Qatar, France, Turkey and Denmark, talking to some of the people that played key roles during the cartoon crisis.

Any religion, including Islam, which targets freedom of expression and freedom of speech with violence and suppression deserves no recognition whatsoever. A so called, ‘Religion of Peace” which calls for such ultimate aggression of violence is only rearing its ugly head as a “Religion of Hypocrisy.”
The followers of Islam and other religions are so quick to deface, insult, criticize and satirize others, but have no tolerance unto themselves. This is delusional and arrogant.
Peace, not hate and believing in fairytales.
I have the highest respect in those who printed the satire inspite of all the threats from these so called Religion of Peace and it is the utmost shame on all of those who didn’t print it even when they are so quick to tout the “Freedom of Expression/Speech” card.
    Peace,
    Fred

So if one was to take a picture of your mother and display her nude to the whole world you’d be fine with it? I mean it is an act of freedom right? you have to understand who Muhammad (SAW) is to Muslims to understand why there was such an outcry over this whole incident, it is like showing a red cloth to a bull and getting attacked than asking why.
Forgive my statement if it came off as rude, just trying to get a point across.
      Peace.

@2f3a704205534185ff518e78be1c54ff:disqus I see your point, but sorry, but your point has nothing to do with this. But, since you mentioned it, I will run with it.
For instance, if as you say, nude pic of my mother, well if it was her choice or it was acquired legally, there is nothing one can say.
Now, this isn’t about that. This is about any pic/drawing of Mohamad. Not nude or anything. So, this can’t compare or relate to your question at all.
Look at all the burning of effigies, violent depictions and such from the islamic world. But no one stands up to it from their side. What about all the depictions/pics/drawings of other creeds by islam? How many have they insulted, but do not care and show no respect?
Another thing, humour is a matter of fact in life. If one can’t accept that, then they have a problem themselves. Humour many times depicts the irony or contradictions in life and situations. One must be able to laugh at one’s self before they can laugh at others.
Now, again, this is about the violence one calls for any pic or drawings of Mohamad. If the followers of islam don’t want any, it is up to them that they don’t make any. But anyone outside can do so as they please. This is called freedom. Simple.
Think about it, if Mohamad was alive today, he would have no choice in the matter with all the technology that is in place today. Captured by mobile phones, media, security and so much more mediums that would have captured his face.
Now, all those who can call for the death of someone just shows their hypocrisy.
That is a fact, pure and simple.
        Peace and respect.
        Not violence.

          Hello Fred
Once you understand religion you would understand how faithful Muslims are to Islam and their belief, you say Muslims have created violent depictions of other creeds that may be true but i have yet to seen any, Islam is similar to monolithic religions as Muslims believe in the virgin Mary, Jesus, etc therefore Muslims would not show Jesus as a man with a gun killing innocent children who are defenseless in their own homes. You see Muslims burning effigies but you should know the reason behind it, after being oppressed for decades people tend to do something to show their rage with the little they can. I would suggest reading real news instead of the brainwashing propaganda you see on TV, you will see why Muslims burn effigies. Mohammad is someone far closer to Muslims than you would think because without him Islam would not exist today so there are many people who are deeply in love with Mohammad for what he has done for them. It’s like hey i have all  the freedom in the world so i’m purposely going to do something which will make many people angry just because i can! It was the Muslims freedom to express their anger with the riots just like that idiot expressed his freedom by doing something to upset people all around the world. Now this may be far fetched but i believe after many years of oppression and not being heard Muslims believe the only way to get their point accross is by violence otherwise they will never get noted, i.e. Palestine. If Mohammad was alive today i would bet you anything that this world would be a better place because you would see the true Islam not Muslims who are desperate and to get their message across are blowing themselves up to do it.
          Peace

Well if drawing cartoons about absolutely anything should be tolerated why not draw cartoons about black slaves picking cotton or Vietnamese people getting killed in war or Haitians struggling in earthquakes or a cancer patient dying… Comics are meant to funny. They are meant to lighten up your mood or make you smile. There is nothing funny about offending mass populations. This kind of freedom of speech does nothing but provoke anger and hate in the world for the sake of arrogance.

Muslims have problems with their neighbors all around the world. Denmark is screwed because they have let so many of them emigrate there and the Danes will never be able to get rid of them.
