This documentary follows a small number of British people with an incurable genetic disease called Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader–Willi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder in which seven genes (or some subset thereof) on chromosome 15 (q 11-13) are deleted or unexpressed (chromosome 15q partial deletion) on the paternal chromosome.

It was first described in 1956 by Andrea Prader (1919-2001), Heinrich Willi (1900-1971), Alexis Labhart (1916), Andrew Ziegler, and Guido Fanconi of Switzerland. The incidence of PWS is between 1 in 25,000 and 1 in 10,000 live births. The paternal origin of the genetic material that is affected in the syndrome is important because the particular region of chromosome 15 involved is subject to parent of origin imprinting, meaning that for a number of genes in this region only one copy of the gene is expressed while the other is silenced through imprinting. For the genes affected in PWS it is the maternal copy that is usually expressed, while the paternal copy is silenced.

This means that while most people have a single working copy of these genes, people with PWS have no working copy. PWS has the sister syndrome Angelman syndrome in which maternally derived genetic material is affected in the same genetic region.

That was the alternative title for the programme, then we thought we’d focus more on the fact that this is a serious problem and a little more complex than being “fat fuckers”…but thank you for your incisive comment

what a bunch of bs. big pharma will try to classify anything as a disease of disorder now to have exclusive rights to “cure” the “disease”.

people don’t get fat but breathing and people choose to shove food into their mouth. being OBESE is NOT a disorder or disease. fat lazy people need to stop making excuses as to why they “can’t” lose weight and big pharma is a criminal organization. when was the last time the medical industry cured anything?

    Reply
    • It isn’t a disease, it’s a syndrome, and a very very rare one at that, these people have less chromosomes and therefore many are sterile. While I agree that many obese people make way too many excuses, these people have a totally legitimate one.

Some of the subjects clearly have mental problems, but I’m sure you don’t see this in India or Africa. These gluttons are just addicts and the people caring for them are to permissive…you don’t get fat on air. My opinion is that prison is the only “cure” for them.

Your ignorance is showing. Any kind of syndrome, especially mental, may not be recognized in other countries. It may be described or clasdified as something else, somewhere else. Prison wouldnt help them. Prison is punishment for a fitting crime. They are punished enough never being satisfied and having their bodies be effected by all the extra weight. Or the relationships they cannot form, or ruin. Or the fact they are basically in solitary confinement, having to bargin and earn the privledge to go to a market neer-by. The syndrome is obviously biological, as it can be explained with the accidental deletion ofchromosomes, that is genetic. If you deny those facts, I guess you cant recognize things like down syndrome as well. Poor.

This is a multimedia piece, only about 3 minutes long, on one father and his son who has prader- willi. He does everything in his power to help his son and control the urges, and goes as far as locking the fridge at night so that his sons weight does not balloon and cause more problems. Worth checking out. I think the ‘it’s not a disease’ idea will be ebolished when you watch it.

I’m saddened by the ignorance of many of the comments below. PW is a genetic chromosomal abnormality; sufferers are mentally deficient not lazy or gluttonous.
It begs the question- At what point do we say that a person is so disabled that they simply cannot be expected to take responsibility for their actions?
Apparently the general consensus is, never.

thats what the big pharma corporations want you to think so they can make big $$ if these are classified as “conditions” these sorts dont exist in 3rd world countries simply because its not a condition but greed and addiction we should not take pitty on these “things”

This is a condition that is evident worldwide. It does exist in 3rd world countries. There is less evidence of this because these people wouldn’t live as long in such conditions. A deletion of the chromosome (as in this condition) is evident in many other conditions, it’s an abnormality not these people being greedy. Dickhead

you are calling a genetic chromosomal disorder a “condition” and call these people greedy. I work as a learning disabilities nurse and i have met many people with this genetic condition it is a real disorder perhaps a more known genetic chromosomal disorder you may be familiar with is down syndrome would you also call this a “condition” and beleive people with downs put on their symptoms for sympathey. perhaps you should bother to find out a bit more about these real conditions and disorders before you post nonsense like this.

They will diey, and then sneak food and lie, they will make life hell to get their demon cravings satisfied for a short bit. Its like ocd, really. They have an obsession to eat, that cannot be stopped, so they eat, the compulsion. Its not that simple, or their wouldnt be homes.

  13. Once again having a scientifically proven disease is proof of moral failure. What a fabulously narrow outlook to have. I feel I have wasted my life taking facts into account. Oh the joys of black and white in a world that consists of shades of grey. It must be lovely to be so free from the ravages of critical analysis.

Typical ignorance, I work in a residential home specifically for the condition. If you don’t understand it, Google it. Ask an adult to read it to you though. Bad parenting? try living with it.

Wow. It makes you think twice before judging someone… you never really know what they may be suffering. What the staff at the care house do is nothing less than amazing – giving their lives back!

So if you are over weight, eat a lot and have some intellectual problem means you have Prader–Willi syndrome? Not 100% sure  what think of this because if someone is autistic and overweight doesn’t mean they have this and it’s very very similar..Anyway i do feel for these people and it must be hard as there is no cure.

oh my god some people in this world! please read the synopsis of the documentary in the box above. prader willi is a GENETIC CHROMOSOMAL DISORDER. it does not mean that if you have an intellectual disability and are overweight that you have prader willi it is a disorder that causes intellectual disability and an insatiable appetite where you always feel hungry you will not get any relief of the feeling of hunger as the part of the brain which tells the body that it is full does not work.

I found it interesting that they were playing sad music at the end.  Apart from the fact that Joe’s probably going to live apart from his parents, they ended it on quite a hopeful note – Tamara’s continuing with her healthy choices and a happy life, and Joe’s settled into the centre that means his condition is NOT hopeless.  It seemed a little strange to have the plinky sad music playing those facts out.
