Deborah 13: Servant of God

A documentary about 13-year-old Deborah Drapper, who, unlike other British teens has never heard of Britney Spears or Victoria Beckham. She has been brought up in a deeply Christian family and her parents have tried to make sure she and her ten brothers and sisters have grown up protected from the sins of the outside world.

Deborah is a bright, confident girl who has big ambitions for her life and the film spends a summer with her as she ventures out in the world to see what life outside her family could be and starts putting her beliefs forward to a wider audience.

  1. She was very emotional about Jesus at the very end, that is true commitment to the lord. As Christians practice, you must love the lord even above your parents, but how can you love someone whom you’ve never met as a pose to your mother working 3 jobs to send you to school? Kudos to her.

Deborah: How can you test the big bang?

Me: Are you able to build a house, take it a part, put it back together? You are not, and if I gave you 100 years you would figure it out, right? Well that was a house, now imagine how many years it would take to build a “big bang”. Just because it hasn’t been done yet does not make it impossible. The haldron supercollider is working on it. Unlike “Christianity” science does not have all the answers given out, it requires time. Just as the bible was not constructed in a day. Before the new testament if you asked Adam/Eve after they were cast out by God if he’d forgive them, do you suppose they would say yes (and if I remember correctly he didn’t)? As you said, “the bible says, so,” well they didn’t have the bible so how could they no Jesus would come? Furthermore, you believe in your religion and that you shall be saved by believing in God, doesn’t that mean if you’re evil and believe in God you shall go to heaven? What if you never even heard of God such as in the tropics? Are those people going to hell? Is that fair? God put them there to damn them? That cannot be if God is fair.

Those university students should have asked more pressing questions. She’s practically an ignorant pope they should have at least given her a “thinking” question.

    • As I understand the Bible people will not be lost due to lack of knowledge. Ignorance is not a moral problem if you cannot do anything about it. But the majority will certainly get lost due to denial of what they do know. So do not blame God for being unfair. You do not know enough to do that. I am sorry if you got your opinion from Christians. We do not all know everything. But if we would stick to what we do know for true, things would be better.

In the Bible, in Romans chapter two, especially verses 14-16 leave the door open for people who never got all the “good news”. Check for yourself!
I am hesitant to call Big Bang science, because I cannot see that it has been scientifically proven. So it is a hypothesis, i.e. it takes faith to believe in it. What I do understand is that explosions usually bring disorder. And if I look out in the universe I see order. If I look into a cell I see order. If I look into the chromosome I see order and logic and higher intelligence. Science cannot explain that, but God can.If I look at the creation story in the Bible, I see order, logic, and higher intelligence. I see a match there.

    • I see some really bad typos, just ignore them….

  2. I found that so hard to watch. She seemed to carry so much negativity with her. All that guilt and perception of being wicked is an awful lot for a child to take on. It is great that she is so confident and sure of herself. But part of growing up is to hear other points of view, question your assumptions, and actively form your opinions from what you learn. Her unyielding view that ‘I am right and you are wrong’ just seemed to come from the ‘training’ her parents gave her. It reminded me of the children with parents who are white supremacists, who go around preaching that other races are inferior and or parents that teach that homosexuality is wrong. It is the same sort of dogmatic judgement without any self-examination.

I hope as she sees more of the world, she can learn to empathise with others a little more. Perhaps as she assess her beliefs critically, rather than accepting them solely because they are what she was taught, she can find a balance between being true to her values and accepting other people’s views.

  3. Apparently, this is much more of a novelty in the UK than in the U.S. However, the US version of the fundamentalist  Christian is much  more confrontational.  It’s the same ending, they  grow up and join the real world or retreat into judgment and isolation.

  4. How superior

  5. There is no God.

When I die, I will cease to exist and my body shall rot in the ground.
But at the very least I recognise this and for exactly that reason I
embrace life everyday and make the most of the time I have.

I was very interested to hear Deborah say that if there was to be no
Heaven or Hell then her entire life would have been a waste, but that
she obviously didn’t think that was the case.

It saddens me to think that already at this early age this girl has
given over her life to a possibility. A possibility that when she dies
there will be something after. The one thing I know is that I have life
NOW. I can’t know for sure if there is anything after and I certainly am
not going to waste my life on a chance.

In the end, the only person I have to please in this life is myself and
the people I care about. I am a good person and I have family and
friends that I love and that love me. I drink, I lie, I swear, I have
sex out of wedlock, and I am also a good and happy person. Anyone else
who would argue otherwise needs to get their nose out of other people’s
lives and get on with their own.

Also, I find Deborah’s witnessing to be amazingly pretentious and arrogant. Telling good people that they are going to Hell for the most ridiculous reasons such as telling a white lie is just ridiculous. You can see the look in Deborah’s eyes when the girl asks her if she will go to Hell with all the pedophiles and murderers. Deborah hesitates, its as if subconsciously she realises what an outrageous comment it is to make, then she says yes. She is a naive young girl with a sheltered, black and white view of the world. I sincerely hope she learns that the world is not and cannot be either yes or no about everything as she grows up, else she is going to ahve a very hard time in the real world.

    • Her salvation, and mine and yours, does not depend on whether we live perfect lives or not, or if we FEEL good about what we are doing. The only thing that matter is our outlook, whether we humbly confess that we do wrong or not. We do not get to heaven for being good. Not one human being is good enough. We get there because Jesus died for us. If we humbly accept that God offers us the “ticket” we will get there. If we excuse our sins, we are lost.

Toward the end of the movie Deborah explains that Jesus died for her sins. This is God’s greatest gift to us. If we reject it, we remain lost. If we receive it, we enter a relation with God, and this is all that matters.

  6. This is interesting. This girl is full-on but she clearly has her own views (however deeply influenced by her parents).
With all the drugs, overt sexuality, sex-everywhere-culture, alcohol, crime etc etc etc etc etc etc etc (the bad stuff is endless) no wonder their parents home school them.
It’s so good to see a young girl with strong views, uninfluenced by the world. It’s a shame she is portrayed as being niave because of her upbringing and her beliefs… just because she does not follow this sick world and “everyone else”.

Every single thing you just said is abhorrent and just plain wrong.

“This girl is full-on but she clearly has her own views (however deeply influenced by her parents).”

She is clearly not allowed her own views. Can you imagine what would happen if she ‘strayed from the path’?

Yes, because all non-Christian children turn out to be sex-crazed drug fuelled criminals don’t they?

So you’d rather her views were influenced by one or two people? Isn’t this why we have such a problem with Islamic fundamentalism? According to you, we, the rest of the world are ‘sick’. Well, I’m not the one going around preaching hate, so I’m not the sick one love.

  7. The big question here is…..who is the girl with the tongue stud who asked them to write on her boobs at the end? I want her email address! 😉

  8. I think he told Deborah that he wouldn’t dance to that song for self-righteous reasons.
One of these days he’s going to dance to the song and like it.

  9. Sweet Jesus! God help her alright! Poor girl.

  10. over population , that is so irrespeonsible

  11. isnt pride a deadly sin?

    • All sins are deadly, because they show you are against God. But Jesus died for all sins, so that if you accept him dying in your place, you can receive forgiveness and have a relation with God despite all sins you have confessed.

If you pride in yourself you have a problem. If you pride in God you are doing fine, for God is God, with everything that includes …

  12. isnt this abuse???

  13. the older brother is gay every one can see it
i don’t see the value of hiding children from reality or brain washing in to a belief.
letting them see reality and and teach them to question everything. after they question everything then they can come up with there own belief not indoctrinated in a young age

    • Children need to be taught thoroughly what is right and what is wrong. This also needs to be modeled by parents and others in the family. The parents and other adults in the family have a grave responsibility to choose solid values for their lives. When the child later moves more freely in society everything will be accepted or discarded by comparing with the basic values induced at home. A child without this firm foundation will probably have a more difficult life, having to test everything to find its own way. The society and its problems reflect what the generations pass to next generation.

I grew up with partly wrong/bad values. I was fortunate to find better values before I became a teenager and an adult. But my childhood experiences still cause me trouble. As every other person I am divided in that sense. I do both good and bad. I think my children are better off, though. They are adults now, and they have made their own choices to stick to what I have taught and modeled to them. Both I an my children depend on the atoning death of Jesus for our sins. That is where our hope is, just like for Deborah and her family.

    • ignore the grammar issues

  14. I bless you and thank you father for this doner kebab…. pmsl ‘good food’ what happened to living off the land that was created by divine intelligence??

  15. Gayest older brother everrrrr….

  16. your saying big bang theory is stupid when you believe that a man made the intire universe

  17. how can you train your child to eternity when you dont even know it exists you arre setting your child up to live and then die exept she isnt living she is ‘serving god’ its ridiculous

    • How can people train their children to chance, when we do not even know if chance exists?

I prefer to believe in and train my children for something that produces harmonious, loving people, rather than people who have no clear reason for living.

  18. I was soo inspired i composed a song about it!

  19. To kotchpatts,
Science today (the empirical method) is permenantly confounded by a problem I call “the infinite null hypothesis conundrum.”  In short this means that for an hypothesis to be completely tested ALL null hypotheses must first be checked.  Until ALL null hypotheses can be accounted for an hypothesis can only ever be unreliable, aka – false.  Holy Scriptures (the Tanakh or the Bible) contains a fail safe proof of God’s authorship.  In it God claims that He alone can tell the future and then He proves it.  Throughout the Tanakh there are around 300 prophecies detailing Christ’s first advent including such details as His place of birth, the timing of His birth, the timing of His death, who would be present at His death, details of His illegal trial and other amazing details of His Life.  Maths Professor Dr Peter Stoner has demonstrated that the odds of these predictions having been fulfilled by chance by just any person are trillions & trillions & trillions & trillions to one.  God indeed inspired the writing of the Scriptures through the prophets.  There is no other sacred text belonging to any religion which contains any prophecy.  Neither the Quran, the Book of Mormon, the Vedas, the writings of the Bahai, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Buddhists, Taoist’s, Satanist’s, New Agers, Theosophist’s nor any other religious group can make this claim.

If you don’t believe God made you and the whole universe – where do you think it came from?

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Act 2:21

    Jesus Christ is Lord.

    Shalom.

  20. This girl impresses me so much. I am an atheist, and I am extremely liberal. But I truly admire her passion for her religion. A few things I disagree with- the subservience of women expected (that she belongs to her father, then her husband). But truly, she has good morals, and she seems reasonably happy. And that’s really the most important thing. She’s not ridiculously sheltered, she’s seen the world, and while her parents have formed most of her views, likely, she’s been exposed to enough that she has formed her own opinions.

  21. those ignorant sons of bitches are you blind, dinosours have been living on the earth for millions and millinos of years ago we have the remains as proof, i have some myself of dino fossils. And yea the earth is really that old. This documantary pissed me the f*ck out.

    • The problem with the fossil record is that it is dated by which layer in the ground that the fossils are found in.

The problem with dating the ground layers is that the layers are dated by what kind of fossils are found in them.

      Circular reasoning? Exactly.

So how do they know the age of the layers and the fossils? They do not. The whole thing is hanging / depending on a hypothesis called the evolution tree. Macro evolution has never been scientifically proven, and no-one knows how to find proof for it.
Furthermore, the so called evolution tree is challenged by a science called DNA-research / genome mapping, because the claimed links between species are not supported the way the evolution tree is built up. Genome mapping forces the branches and twigs on the evolution tree to be cut and moved criss cross all the time. It is a big confusion. If you follow scientific documentation of different findings of genetic research you will know what I mean, things like “the nearest relative to this little mouse is the elephant …” (I cannot give any example right now.)

So, you may say, carbon 14 shows the age. Does it? If you test the fossil carbon 14 will give numerous, differing results on every specimen, and then the scientists pick the result that fits best with the evolution tree! The other results are called contamination of specimen or something of that kind. One example of this is when they found in a lake in South America living creatures (I think it was snails or something) that according to carbon 14 are thousands of years old or more. When they try to date with carbon 14 archaeological specimen that can be culturally dated they choose among all the results the test result that corresponds best with the known cultural or historical dating.

I do not trust carbon 14 testing. My logic has questioned it too often.

Besides there have been found in archaeological excavations in Latin America clay figurines depicting human beings and dinosaurs of different kinds. Man has lived together with dinosaurs. In European and Chinese cultures, for example, the dinosaurs are called dragons. There are artifacts depicting these dragons, and they look like dinosaurs. Apparently the dinosaurs were not extinct until some hundred years ago.

If people knew about all these things they would not be so sure any more.

By the way, fossilization is a process that is not commonly repeated in nature.  It takes a rapid covering of the specimen, and lots of heavy pressure, to create a fossil. Something that only happens in huge natural disasters, such as the flood story in the Old Testament. (It starts in Genesis chapter 6, verse 9.)

  22. I always enjoy these little peeks into other people’s lives, especially the ones that are so different from mine. What an interesting worldview these parents have given their children! Personally, I think it’s a complete waste and it’s disappointing to see these parents “train,” as they say themselves, their children to think this way. But it’s sure interesting to watch, and it definitely makes me appreciate what I consider to be my more well rounded life. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

Having watched some of his rubbish myself in an attempt to understand his tremendously misinformed point of view I was not surprised to recognize a whole heap of other justifications for the existence of god throughout  the documentary. This must be how here parents are home schooling her…

  30. kfc=good food? what is this girl on? eating something that so much cruelty has gone into is a sin in my book..

  31. She is only 13 and there is always HOPE so don’t write her off yet.  Some of the stuff you wore when you were a child is awful in reflection, like my first wedding the moustache and the pale blue suit Oh my gosh.

  33. the end sounds like a little kid crying for blankie

    • Adrian, making fun of a repenting soul just distances you farther away from God. You must repent of making fun of repentance. Ever think of that?

  37. shes aumish

  38. if u told here that we are now cable of destroying what god made in 7 days in 2 hours would she worship us??

  39. LOL if you drink and go to hell then why did jeebus turn wine into water?  XD

At first i was disgusted with her, but now i just feel sad.  what a wasted life.  how can you spend your life judging people instead of doing good things, using your talents, and experiencing the world.

  40. I am honestly sorry about her and her brainwashed family. I’m glad to be an atheist.

  43. Very interesting documentary. Very well filmed and edited. It taught me that creationists are now in Europe where i thought nonsens was very much frown upon. Although I don’t reckon this kind of silly certainty would take up in France.

  44. Did anyone else feel her brother was only saying he wouldn’t dance to Katy Perry’s “I kissed a girl” because his little sister was there? He probably has tried lots of things since starting Uni and probably wouldn’t have cared ordinarily, but since Deborah was standing there with a look of general disapproval about the whole thing, it looked as if he was sitting it out in an attempt to please her or something. Ha ha.

  45. I am glad the full documentary was posted, as I find it fascinating.  There is a serenity to the family. I found it amusing that little boys were perched on high shelves or barns w/o a care in the world. The “big bang” comments just make me sad as didn’t God invent science, too?  I would love if the filmmakers did a follow-up, like the 7-Up series.  Deborah is supremely secure NOW, but what happens at University, where even her (possibly gay) brother admitted he couldn’t help but dance! It is extremely sad that she values her life as just a blip.  That a DEATH CULT is her foundation.  She doesn’t look that happy, but she is serene, if not smug.  I found her brother guileless and charming and wish him a lifetime of happiness when he hits the wall ahead.

  46. I was open to Christianity. Until I watched this.

    • I would suggest reading about all the various religions and their common denominator instead of watching a BBC production where the inteviewer asks a 13 year old if she would like to go a party with her peers and indulge in drink and sex!

  47. I only feel sorry for her because she’s a Christian and it really isn’t her fault. I agree with her though that it is sad that 13 year olds are having sex at that young age.

  50. I see so many comments below condemning this girl and her parents, I too feel sorry for her, that she hasn’t experienced the world and come to her own beliefs, however, what’s worse, a girl devout in her belief of god or the louts that destroyed London recently? the thugs that walk down the streets in every city in the western world? I know which one I’d prefer.
I’m not a catholic, in fact if I see something religious on tv I have to change it, but I do think you have to respect peoples beliefs, even when they’re not your own, probably especially if they’re not your own.
This girl hasn’t been raised in what we would see as the right way, but it’s not the wrong way either, she has respect for all that’s around her, she’s interested in learning and she’s young so she’ll learn more. How she’ll end up only time can tell. I do know that I’d rather have her as a neighbour than some of the scumbags that are living near me now!
