A documentary about 13-year-old Deborah Drapper, who, unlike other British teens has never heard of Britney Spears or Victoria Beckham. She has been brought up in a deeply Christian family and her parents have tried to make sure she and her ten brothers and sisters have grown up protected from the sins of the outside world.
Deborah is a bright, confident girl who has big ambitions for her life and the film spends a summer with her as she ventures out in the world to see what life outside her family could be and starts putting her beliefs forward to a wider audience.
I found this very uncomfortable to watch. I mean no disrespect to the family, although, I personally would never raise my children like that. But, her upbringing and home schooling has taught her the basic foundation her life revolves around: going to heaven and hell. It does seem she is afraid of sinning…heck, she does everything she can do spread the word of God and educate others. However, is religion supposed to induce fear? Deborah is friggin afraid of going to hell.
I am a Christian myself but now 20 years old I’ve began to ask myself questions regarding my religion. I have based myself as a person who makes their own choices for the better of myself before I do good unto others. Basically, I must be happy for me to make others happy. No that doesn’t mean robbing a bank for money then donating it to charity. As the person I am, I use my morals and ethical judgement to make my decisions. Sure anyone can choose whatever religion you want but are you really going to follow the teachings? I remember going to church every Sunday to hear the readings of the gospel and the priests’ homilies about how we can incorporate the gospel’s message into our lives. People walk out of the church and go goddamn sinning again! Society does not follow the teachings that are being provided to us, I am one of them. Material possessions have ultimately become our #1 source of happiness for it will truly help us move on in life…But what lies beyond death? None of us know. No one.
Nowadays I read the papers and watch the news. The message I’m getting is religion has killed more people than it’s saved.
Um, the lust for power/land/control has definitely killed more people than religion! If anything, religion has been the justification (in a very weak, self serving way but the rulers who couldn’t care less), but not the motivation. Not, or course, that the millions killed by deliberate food policies in China and the Ukraine can be chalked up to anything more than human arrogance. Also, I’ve never seen religion as the motivation for the millions killed in WWI WWII, Vietnam or most civil wars. Pure politics, those.

Matt, I was raised in a Christian home, but I turned away when I was a teenager because I was no longer scared of hell. God used depression in my life to bring me to Him and when I was 16 I believed in Jesus as my Lord and Savior and confessed my sins. Matt where do your moral and ethical judgements come from? Do they could from yourself or the Bible? If they come from yourself what makes your truth better than anyone else’s truth? But if they come from the Bible you have to ask the question is the Bible, the Word of God, so part of it the Word of God, or is none of it the Word of God (just human conspiracy)? First the Bible is backed by historical accurancy, over 23,000 archilogical digs, fulfilled prophesy (Jesus himself fulfilled over 300 prophesies), the New Testment has over 24,000 copies of portions of it the earliest dating back to around 120 AD. The Bible has 66 books with over 40 authors and yet it is 1. Internally consistant, 2. Coaborate, and has 3. Reliablity. These are all reasons outside the Bible. Does the Bible say it is the Word of God? Yes it does. In 2 Tim 2:16 it says “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” 1 Peter 1:24-25 says “All men are like grass, and their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever. And this is the word that was preached to you”. In 2 Peter 1:16-21, Peter would was one of Jesus’ disciples says “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and the coming for our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” What seperates Christianity from other religions is the Resurrection of Jesus Chirst, and the great textual evidence for the authenticity of Scripture as we have received it. You have to have faith in Jesus Chirst as Lord and Savior, but it is not a blind faith.

I read a book a few years ago – it’s called Misquoting Jesus. It breaks down how the bible evolved based on painstaking evidence from all these texts. Remember there wasn’t a printing press until very recently. Beforehand – people copied by hand – and so with maybe over thousands of authors they do not all say the same thing. They are not 1. They reflect 2000 years of written broken telephone.
This book helped clear up for me what likely wasn’t in the most original. It had amazing analysis of the way we interpret things wrong too – for example, we have to be careful not to be carried away with ideas such as “more copies say x, therefore x is true” because often it was a bad copy that just had more reproductions or for some reason those copies were not destroyed or they were not used as often so they didn’t wear down.
It may be also interesting to actually know what earlier versions say versus the commonly used King James bible which is actually a copy of more than a millennium years later…. I highly recommend this book. Theres such a plethora of information in it – couldn’t put it down.
So… the Bible has 40 authors, multitudes of conflicting texts, was assembled and limited to what the early Church elite decided what it could and could not contain. You actually base your whole life on this book. Are you insane?
And yes, the Bible has tons of history. So does the story of the Odyssey, but you don’t worship Zeus, do you? Wake up to reality, or I will be forced again and again to scorn your strange, macabre fantasy of a religion.
Yes, there are many manuscripts, but the differences are so small that the message is not altered for one who searches the truth. (But the author of the book who claims the opposite, he must claim it, for he makes money on his book.) If you compare today’s Old Testament text with the Dead Sea Scrolls, there is no difference. It is true there are differing translations, but a wise person compares the translations.
The story of the Odyssey is an interesting comparison, because few would question that novel. The Bible has tens of thousands times more manuscripts and numerous different early translations, yet it is questioned right and left. Why? Because it is too challenging for most persons if God really exists as the one he claims to be. So the problem is not the credibility of the manuscripts, but man’s claim for independence.
hahah that took you 20 years?
This is one of the most saddest thing i’ve ever watched. It makes me angry. Everything they do serves the perpouse of keeping them isolated and naive. Nothing to question their belief – which is utter bullshit.
And what about if there is no hell, that’s that but what if it does exist! Hah! Gott’ya!
Is that a good reason to believe?
Nothing makes any sense.
Please, all believers just die..
“Please, all believers just die”???
Is this your faith or is genocide just your soup du jour?
“Please, all believers just die”???
Is this your faith or is genocide just your soup du jour?
So, in the beginning God created Man in his own image….but “we are wretched and horrible people so God sent Jesus”??????????? When do these people teach critical thinking to their children?
Aside from any religious beliefs, I find it to be absolutely heartbreaking to me that this young girl at 13 feels her life is short and almost meaningless and that its just a “dash” from when shes born to when she dies. I hope she someday finds something that she is passionate about and loves other than God.
That girl should be punched in the face.
That girl should be punched in the face.
Shame on those parents for brainwashing those kids. SHAME ON THEM.
The brother is so gay, to funny.. Maby he dont know it jet, but jezus won’t like it.. LOL.. Everyone can belive what they want but don’t try to brainwash somebody! To funny how a man (was speaking to a group of people) dinosaurs never have existed.. Are you stupid?! Damn.. The bones they found where plastic? Pfff.. I (maby) agree about the fact that the most englisch tenaage people are f*ucked up.. Just try to find a way in the middle, that you feel good about it yourself..

I think that the brother and sister seem a little too close… I guess that’s the result of only knowing your family throughout your important formative years. I’m concerned for them.
I am quite pleased with this documentary. It is a breath of fresh air to see young people concerned about something other than the idiocy that is offered in the main media. Why when children choose to follow they’re parental/ God inspired leadership that they are somehow being forced against they’re will? The early churches in America were very similar to this family. Keep up the good work Deborah, and don’t be disuaded from your mission. And how anyone can equate this family with Nazism is way out there.I think these kids are free from the drug and sex crazed society that surrounds them. She seems happy in her life, and so many people are so miserable in they’re own lives that they just do’nt understand how someone can be so happy in their own skin.
There is a third way you know. I have a daughter who is now 20 and attending university. She is neither indocrinated into any religion nor is she a sex/drug crazed person who only cares about what colour nail varnish to wear. The problem with people of any religion it appears to me is they seem to think they have a monopoly on morals! That offends me greatly.
Although can I just say that obviously my morals wouldn’t necessarily 100% align with yours! But that doesn’t make you right.
And can I just distinguish between people of faith and religious people because a lot of people believe in a God of some sort but don’t follow a religious doctrine. In my experience you only get the problems with the religious ones.
@a63443c38378c7d0652d7fbe0ff0992d:disqus : You’re right sir, she must be really happy living believing that she is a lying, coveting, blasphemous and wretched piece of shit that deserves to go to hell. Didn’t your parents spread that kind of happiness in your ife?

In the interests of full disclure: I used to be a brainwashed believer, then became agnostic because I was still scared of the fairy tale, and then I became atheist and, finally, antitheist.
Just because someone can inject sperm into a woman they’ve married and then grow the resulting embryo to term and eject a child into the world does not give them the right to ruin that child’s life. Childbirth is not a miracle and people don’t own children. There need to be limits, and there are.
I find no difference between this girl being brainwashed in such a poisonous manner and a recent case in Canada where two children were removed from the ‘care’ of their parents who were teaching their children the ideals of Nazism. The two are both instances where the parents are harming their children in an easily observable manner. Normal kids don’t have documentaries like this made about them.
Both Nazism and Christianity (you can say this of any of the big three Abrahamic, monotheistic religions, however) are, at their core, groups who hate free thought, hate others not like them and want to control everything at the peril of those who do not want to follow. They despise life and long to keep their believers in a constant state of self-denial in anticipation of a death that promises to reward them for their god’s mistake: life.
Both also try to hide these facts under the guise of love, in a twisted, disgusting manner that, fortunately for them, Christians are better at concealing.
While Nazis failed in their horrible campaign to rid the world of Jews, Christianity has been the most successful genocidal enterprise throughout history, having wiped numerous wonderful cultures off the Earth, while having reduced many others to mere shells of their former selves.
So, while I do believe we need to be careful of what we allow the state to legislate, I think we have to start somewhere. If this hurts the feelings of religious folks, that should be of no more concern to anyone than the hurt feelings of a racist when we tell them their beliefs are foolish and evil.
In fact, if Christians had had their way, we would still be bringing Africans over to work as slaves for us.
As always, religion only capitulated when there was no other choice, and quickly changed their tune in order to maintain any amount of relevance that could be saved. All the while, they await their next chance at control. For proof of this, just look at the United States right now, and the insanity they are allowing to infect their population under the guidance of laws that tell them religion is to be treated with reverence and is not to be persecuted.
Religion should damn well be persecuted. If possible, it should be stopped. It preys on the weak, and it rewards and encourages willful ignorance and denial of truth in its subjects to the point where the world is now in peril of being destroyed by it. Just one of these nutbars hears the right word from his god and we could be in a nuclear war, over myths.
Anyway, I digress…a shorter answer would be that the state already legislates what acceptable belief or opinion is. I simply believe they are falling short of the mark.
Another way to think of this: Freeing children from the grips of these parents would be an act of liberty. It would only inconvenience the parents, who would lose a victim. Everyone else would benefit.
So if a child isn’t his parents… who’s child is it? That kind of talk is so disturbing it’s scary. Just because you don’t agree with the parents beliefs… all the sudden their not fit to be parents?
That’s arrogance at a whole new level. Read the book “1984”…. you would fit right in that kind of setting.
What’s your alternative? Please tell me oh master of the universe…. you seem to know everything. I’d like to understand what belief system you consider “right”. What’s the one size fits all “philosophy of life” that we all should be living according to you?
Anybody who judges these parents because of the way they raise their kids obviously doesn’t have kids of their own. The children were fed… sheltered… end of story. Take that self righteousness somewhere else.
You actually have the nerve to write something like this on a comment forum for people to read? Remember what the scripture says ” the fool says in his heart there is no God.” You may find yourself running back to church very soon when life’s problems hit you.
Boy you are spot on. I find this girl smug and frightening.
It seems your view of Christianity is made up by people who are misled. I know that misled or egotistic people have created what is called the history of the so called Christian world, and you have given examples from that. But that does not match the life of Jesus as it is portrayed in the four Gospels in the New Testament. If you read that story and ponder upon it, you will realize that what you ascribe to the Christian faith is not caused by its founder, Jesus.
Are you serious?
That is the most pathetic post I have ever read. You Internet Athiests really do come out of the woodwork and troll anything to do with religion without fail. I used to argue against you pretty much as i am doing now but I have just realised something. Your arguments are that dumb that you would actually convert a non believer into a fully fledged saint all by yourself.
Keep on mate you really are doing Gods work
ha ha Mr blue you have no idea what you are talking about…slavery has little or anything to do with religion or Christianity….Religion is seldom the root cause….it is other factors, culturalm, land rights, plain racism, political, money or other. Stop putting the blaim on religion …it just doesnt warrant it. Despite what you think many Christians and people of other faith are free thinking ….very much so….it just happens to be that the faith they have allows them to see the rubbish that needs to be thrown from their lives….in order to live a better life…which may be misconstrued as being narrow minded.
The satanic church says do what thou wilt under love…..this doesnt work ….it can’t it will ultimately lead to doing something that may seem benign but ends up hurting others and mankind. This girl is not necessarily being brainwashed….it is a form of protection as the world in its entirety is a pretty sick place…teh more you can isolate yourself from that shit…possibly the better you are for it. Nazism is vastly different to Christianity come on are you serious…
Nazism was founded on catholic values and supported by a pope. The catholic youth was rebranded as the Hitler Youth once Hitler rose to power.
jesus supported slavery (Ephesians 6:5 NLT, 1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)
jesus even explains how to beat slaves (Luke 12:47-48 NLT)
Explain again how christianity isn’t like Nazism, and care to show how you came to the conclusion that slavery has nothing to do with christianity while you are at it?
Paul you claim that many Christians and people of faith are free thinking. Why is it that the Pope instructs individuals NOT to use condoms and other forms of STD/STI protection? And why when the most impoverished, uneducated and vulnerable peoples in Africa take this to heart and cause HIV epidemics does the Pope not encourage people to safeguard their medical livelihood to as you so unequivocally state ‘live a better life’?
you are gettin confused between christians (followers of Jesus) and religion (catholism).
The Pope is Catholic. However, considering the pretty one-eyed approach of most people on here, Catholics would probably be regarded as the same as Methodists, Baptists, Quakers, Greek Orthodox, Unitarians and Amish. Or should we just round them up into a group rather arrogantly named ‘People who believe in silly things, so lets stop them from believing in silly things’?
As a Christian I do not heed to the words of the pope primarily, or even secondarily. History has proven. I heed to the words of God. Jesus Christ is never wrong. I can be a huge difference between being a Christian, as you know it, and being a follower of Jesus Christ.
If people would heed to the Word of God HIV would not be a big problem in the first place. But reality is people choose for themselves how to do things.
amen…
so true, mr blue. couldn’t have put it better.
You know nothing about National Socialism. What those Canadians were teaching their children is orders of magnitude closer to the truth than the cultural Marxism to which those kids were being subjected in public school.
“Racism” is reality. Nature is “racist.” Anti-racists such as yourself are the true threat to freedom, as you not only deny reality, but are hell-bent on destroying those who respect and choose to live in accord with reality.
It is your beliefs that are foolish and evil. They are as reality-averse as those of the looniest religious fundamentalists, and it was your worldview made manifest in politics that resulted in the greatest slaughters in history.
I agree… “Racism” what a joke.
You’re an ‘anti-theist’? Now there’s a conundrum. Your little epistle would be comical, apart from the fact that there is a definite threatening tone to it. Careful what you wish for…

If God existed I’d be Anti-Theist!!! LOL….what good is a Slaver?
I completely agree with you. Religion = cult. Those involved are just too brainwashed and naive to see the truth.
You actually have the nerve to write something like this on a comment forum for people to read? Remember what the scripture says ” the fool says in his heart there is no God.” You may find yourself running back to church very soon when life’s problems hit you.
What if you have the wrong god? There are 2000 active religions many pre date the Jews and Xians versions. Heck there are 30000 sects of Xians, they can not all be right?
When you have knowledge instead of fear and ignorance religion become clear for what it is a hoax enforced for by violence and terror until the enlightenment and reason rose to challange the falsehoods and theocratic dictators. As one of the Pops slipped up and said “It has served us well this ledgend of Christ”.
The only time I would run to a church, would be to rescue and abused (raped child), to burn it down or to help turn it into a community centre for everyone to share.
“The fool says…”
So we should feel bullied into believing in a god? These guys that wrote The Bible sound like assholes.
You’re an idiot. An angry, brainwashed (Yes. I said brainwashed) idiot. I’d try to help you, but I’m not interested in becoming the next bandwagon you jump on. My only advice: please, have an original thought sometime, and own it.
Mr Blue explained his thoughts very clear. Very articulate. And you respond with name calling.
Wow.
Ad Hominem based replies take so much thought to convey. It actually is a testament to the expanse of your mentality. The man writes what can equate to a thesus worth of what he feels are his thoughts and you seem to think that 2 run-on sentences from what certainly is a Harvard educated vomit hole just tore right through all of that. It would have been better if you just told him that he was going to hell or something touchy-feely like that but you say you would try to help him? Help him be what? Endoctrinated too? Scared of Skyfairies like you?
Tell ya what, Heaven is for real. I’ve said so. Now grab the nearest gun and you and I will have a race there. Last one in is a hell-bound homosexual.
I am not a Christian because I am scared. I am a Christian because I do not need to be scared. Knowing God, there is actually nothing to be scared of. But those who do not know God, have plenty of reasons to be scared.
I hope you will find more reliable information about the Christian faith.
But here’s the thing.. you think that without God there’s a reason to be scared, so hence you are running god to escape fear. The main point is that you are trying to say for certain what no one can prove. Therefore you don’t actually know that its true, you just hope, so when you say that this is the way it is for sure, you turn yourself into a liar.
One can be convinced about one’s hopes, and building one’s life on that, and sharing that hope with others. If you say that such a person is a liar, well, may it be so then. (Future will show if hope is a lie or not.) But people with a good hope are better off than those who are hopeless.
Before I knew God I was not afraid, for I knew not better. Now as I know God (at least a bit) I understand that those who deny him have things to fear in the future, even though they may not be aware of it now (just as I was not aware).
Yes, I take is as a “fact” that what I say is true. It is called “faith”. Every person has some kind of faith, it just has different names. Even atheism is a “faith”, a “belief” that there is no God. (I am aware that I may not have used all words correctly, please respect that. It is hard to express philosophical reasoning correctly without knowing the exact terminology for everything. But I think you can understand my line of thought.) Future will prove if the atheist is right or if the person believing in God is right. We can look at facts, and I have found enough “evidence” for my stand. Fulfilled biblical prophecies is one example. The space here is not enough to go into details this time, but other threads on this page deal with some of it.
Faith by definition is belief without evidence. Without evidence it is not a fact. It is wish thinking. It is not Atheists verses a Gods as there are many.
It is because ALL the evidence goes against ALL the gods man has made.
Atheism is a single stand on a single subject, you or other claim their is a God or Gods, I reject your claim because there is no proof or evidence and a mountain against. That is using reason, logic and knowledge.
I am sure you do not believe in Zeus or Apollo think why and you will no why I don’t believe in your fabrication. In fact you are an atheist I just go one god more.
Reason, logic and knowledge are the enemies of religion.
me too,
Since you brought it up — I’m not nearly as afraid of “Skyfairies” (is that always capitalized?) as I am of sharks. Perhaps the most interesting point I’d like to bring up though, is that you condemn my “ad hominem” reply, only to furnish me with your own. But wait! Could that be a clever nod to your avatar, “Dikotomii”? Let’s just be honest with each other: When faced with a question so daunting, it’s just easier (and more fun) to insult people. Still, I wish you and the rest of these brilliant minds would stop being such pussies and use your real name’s to attach to your strong opinions. Otherwise, how will I recognize you when the bandwagon comes around?
Casey, may I call you Casey? I just don’t want to force a sense of familiarity. I’m assuming that you’re Christian, please correct me if I’m wrong. Mr. Blue brought up the point that Deborah and the rest of her siblings should be remanded to state care, given the apparent fundamentalist and possibly militant overtones of her parents. Now this may seem absolutely mad to you, but how would you feel about Wiccan parents homeschooling their children, or Muslim parents homeschooling their children and preaching that women should serve men unquestionably, cover their body with black robes and full face masks, and allow their male partner to have more than one wife – tell me Casey, would you if you had the power to remove those Muslim children and place them in state care?

(Sorry for intervening in your conversation; I am not Casey.) There are limits to everything. Some parents teach their children to use alcohol and drugs, and to use weapons. Society puts limits for its own good. There is good Christianity and bad Christianity. There is Islam that gives peace and there is Islam that causes war. We cannot simply color everything in black and white. There are grey shades everywhere, even if we think white would be best, but none of us can live up to it.
A question i think should be asked is weather her outlook on life is really that bad compared to the other teenagers you saw when they were out in the beginning. When you see these 13-14 year old girls sitting out smoking, drinking, doing drugs and god knows what at least i think her life is alot better. And I’m not religous and neither is anyone in my family but i mean seeing those kids smoking and drinking just makes me sick, where are the parents? At least her parents care…
Lol, marcus – No offense but I’ll bet your not that fun at party’s. Look at those kids- drinking and smoking, and doing drugs, and (GASP!) having sex!!! How Horrible!
Are you kidding? I miss those days when i didn’t have any responsibility and could just go get fucked up with my friends. It was one of the best times in my life. In fact in my country (Canada) over 3/4 of the population has admitted to doing illegal drugs, but less than 30% even smoke weed anymore. Its part of growing up in my humble opinion. (weed isn’t as big a deal here as in the US)
In my experience it’s the kids who have over-protective parents that deserve pity. I went to elementary with a couple of brothers who’s mom would not allow them to watch power rangers, the simpsons, or to play video-games. This had the effect of isolating the brothers so that they became unable to relate to anything their peers of that age were into. They quickly became segregated and found it harder and harder to function in that society until they were eventually removed from classes. I wonder what happened to them and suspect that they still have trouble relating to most people.
@mrblue; I find your posts well-thought out and agreeable. However on the subject of making it a crime i pose a question; (I’m agnostic BTW) We are all indoctrinated with our parents morals in one way or another, does the benefit of making it a child abuse crime outweigh the dangers of setting a precedent whereby the state legislates what acceptable belief or opinion is? Not that I’m arguing against child protection laws mind you, just food for thought.
“I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.” – Thomas Jefferson
Big difference between the two. Kids drinking and smoking, rebelling in other words, is natural and most kids do something to this effect that others find awful. The will most likely turn out being able to understand and operate in the real world.
She, on the other hand has been brainwashed. That should be a child abuse crime. For her to overcome this mind-numbing indoctrination will take years if it ever happens. She could be ruined for life, and she never had a choice.
To equate the two would be to have those smoking and drinking kids brainwashed to think that these behaviors are the right behaviors and any other behaviors are wrong, and they sit around all day worshiping their acts and then feel the need to try to get others to do as they do.
The mind takes a lot longer to heal from poisons.
Very good documentary, she seems like a quite clear minded girl and with further influence from outside sources i believe she will change her outlook on life.
The thing that I reacted on with her outlook on life and christianity was the focus on hell and sins. This is probably the fault of her parents, when you teach children about christianity it should be about love, not hate. I’m not religious myself either should probably be said.
Well, given the fact that there exist many hate-related passages in the Bible, and assuming that the parents aim to convey its message literally, it would definitely be justified to emphasize these passages. If, instead, one would focus only on the parts that are said to represent love, and make no mention of the overabundance of hate-related passages, the message conveyed would be no more than an inaccurate and dishonest representation.
I feel quite sad for her, she seems very preoccupied with these big, heavy ideas at such a young age. I can understand her parents and brother are proud of her for having such conviction in her beliefs, but if I was her mother I’d want her to relax and bit more and enjoy things a bit more suited to girls her age. People rightly complain about the oversexualisation of children, and that they are growing up too fast, but I think the same goes for this girl. She isn’t enjoying being a kid because she has these very heavy thoughts in her mind all the time.
I think when she grows up a bit and goes into the world she’s going to have to be very careful with what she says. Her brother’s friends were amazingly patient with her – if a 13 year old turned up at my party, started preaching, and telling me I was a bad person I’d not be very impressed. I hope she tones the way she speaks down as she gets older, because when her family aren’t around to protect her she may find that others are less accepting and tolerant of the her approach. I hope she also grows to understand and accept that not everyone has the same view as her, and that forcing her beliefs onto other people at every opportunity can be inappropriate.
Also, I agree with the lady in the holiday park, and what others are saying. Individuals families can raise their kids however they like, but it’s wrong to force your opinions in such a blatant way onto other young, impressionable children, and especially to use an innocent puppet show as a guise to lure the children in.
Tamsin, I think that you make a very good point. People complain that sexual images in the media steals the innocence of young people. But teaching a child that everyone is worthless and that most of mankind is doomed for an eternity of torture robs them of their childhood in a way that television never could
Poor little brainwashed girl is going to have a REALLY hard time assimilating into the real world.
Just off the record really quickly (don’t jump on me about christianity or the quality of the doc or my language) I just wanna know: Did anyone thought about Incest when you watched the doc? Cuz I was getting weird vibes off the brother and sister. (though maybe it’s only cuz I live in a less family-oriented area. As in I don’t do so much “family stff”) but I thought their relationship was ABIT on the weird side. Or is it just me? I don’t have a brother so I won’t really know.
I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK. GET OPINIONS. SO DON’T SHOOT ME ABOUT BEING IGNORANT ABOUT SIBLINGS-RELATIONSHIP OR SMTH. I AM IN DOUBT HENCE I AM ASKING. (just to clarify) 🙂
Well I understand why you would think that, but I think its just their close to each other. The family is different from most families. They kind of isolated themselves and in the beginning the siblings said that their best friends are eachother. I don’t think they have very many friends, and they spend a lot of time with their family. So I dont think its that kind of relationship.
I don’t think it’s incest either. My sister and I are very close. We do everything together (and she is 7 years younger than me). We are truly best friends. That’s how I see Deborah and Matthew’s relationship
Furthermore, I am curious as to whether the refutations of Pascal’s Wager would have any influence on Deborah’s mind. I cannot conceive how one can find the morality of the Christian God appealing. One need only read Leviticus to see a glimpse of His despicable character. If such a God did in fact exist, I would rather go to hell being a moral atheïst than implicitly approve of his sick morality in heaven.

The old man’s facial expression at 26:09 reflects everything that I feel when seeing this.
I am not even angry at Deborah. I feel extremely sorry for her. I do want to rips the parents a new one though >.<
I think it’s wonderful that she hasn’t been exposed to pop culture and has been given the chance to live a life that’s entirely her own – BUT – is she? Like I said, the media is a horrible thing for anyone to be exposed to, but religion has been responsible for more mass destruction and killing than any other kind of violence. I find it especially worrying for a female to believe that god exists because women apparently need to be punished. My father (who believes in god) said to me once, “If god is this all knowing force for good that people say he is then god doesn’t care weather you believe in him or not. Just as long as you’re a good person”. This girls mind has been completely skewed by religion in that her world is black and white. My children will not be raised by pop culture, but they certainly are not going to be raised by religion either. All humanity is lost when you categorize yourself and the people around you. Nature is love – not some mythical white bearded MAN up in the clouds. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in what can’t be seen with the eye: natures energy that surround and connect us
I just wish, no matter your belief, that people would see the value in stopping populating the world and adopt the many that need adoption.
i think this young girl could easily be mistaken for being mentally ill.
Your’e too high up on your horse to see what an idiot you are. I see nothing friendly about your previous comments so wipe the rabid foam from your mouth and stfu. And if you think Monty Python is childish toilet humour you clearly lack the intelligence to understand it so go back to your South Park. Making fun of your friends or portraying a character on TV is one thing, poking fun at a complete stranger is quite another, but you wouldn’t understand because you believe yourself superior to everyone.
You replying to someone again this time? Or just once again randomly placing this type of comment in a thread of its own on purpose?
No, this time hes replying to me. He took it upon himself to become the humor police on this internet forum. (I know, lol) But hes afraid i’ll respond again so rather then posting under the original thread, or even stating to who its @, he creates a new thread hoping i’ll miss it and he can have the last desperate word. I was going to let him but since you asked…
When i call you an idiot ramus, i use evidence, reason, and your own words to validate said claim. I have made no accusations that i have not backed up. You on the other hand provide no evidence, or even a real argument.
Heres an example; Ramus: “I see nothing friendly about your previous comments so wipe the rabid foam from your mouth and stfu.” – Oh really? which part of my original statement was less friendly, the part where i said i was just joking, or the winking emote with its tongue stuck out? Once again – Your stupid. Case in point.
The best though is when he said; “And if you think Monty Python is childish toilet humor you clearly lack the intelligence to understand it so go back to your South Park.” This is a quote mine for one. Childish was his word, not mine. Secondly after implying in the tradition of Voltare that the american toilet humor he deemed childish often had socio/political criticisms underpinning it that he did not understand (hence his description childish) and comparing it to monty python, he decides to ironically parrot my accusations back at me without even understanding them.
I suppose i am the fool, though. If he cant even understand what a friendly jibe is, why would i expect him to understand such a concept?
Ramus unlike you, i actually am a fan of monty python. Just like american humor though, some of it is low-brow simply for the sake of a laugh. Could you explain to me the deep meaning im missing in this great monty python act and how its not toilet humor – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxVKtNkQAtw (Monty Python; Sit on my face)
All insults aside ramus, if you embrace some humility and learn to admit when your wrong instead of rigorously defending deeply flawed arguments you will find life a lot easier. The biggest obstacle to real learning is one’s own ego. Always remember this.
This is rather distressing watching someone so young with such heavy ideas on the world.
Being able to turn her back on science so early and saying there is no evidence for the big bang seems as though she hasnt actually even picked up a book and read about quantum physics, philosophy or even just the opinion of Richard Dawkins.
I dont think that she doesnt have the right to be able to speak or live her life by the word of “god” but she doesnt have the right to be forcing it on others who dont think the same as she does.
How she will grow in life would be another interesting docu to watch and see what things she will face later in life if it is that she will continue to be as god fearing as she is.
Omg..I didn’t even finish watching it, it made me nervous, how can their father say his children love the Lord, they are too little and don’t get what he is talking about!! Instead of isolating them from the society they should let them go to school because their parents won’t live forever and sooner or later those children will face the real world and will discover things they are not prepared to! I really hope they won’t follow their sister who bases whatever she does on the bible. Of course everyone should have values and may believe in something, but radicalism will never bring any good!
I feel so bad for Deborah’s brother he can’t tell his sister
or his family that he is gay. Maybe they know and they just don[t want to
admit it. You can’t be a christian and be gay can you?
I agree to an extent that society focuses too much on looks, sex, alcohol, drugs etc. However, not everywhere is like that. I am pretty sure that if she was raised with good morals and values from her parents, rather than making her live every second of her life in fear of burning in hell, she would have a much better and normal social life. I DON’T THINK GOD WOULD BE VERY HAPPY IN SEEING A LITTLE GIRL SUFFERING FOR HER “SINS”, RATHER THAN LIVING LIFE HAPPILY LIKE MOST OF THE CHILDREN.
there’s not much fun in being her, or her highly confused brother. sad
I find it typical that the only comment some people can make is “The son is gay”. And? What’s your point? So what if he is? Grow up.
@Sharon
Good comments. Although I am not a Christian your comments speak of open wisdom. I was talking to someone at work today about how I believe in science/evolution all the way back to the point of the big bang. At which point the laws of physics break down and the only answer I can think of to how did the big bang start is someone started it, ergo a godlike being. I’m starting to believe that god set everything in motion but that then leaves another problem – who created god?
Who Created God? That is a question I’ve had many times and I feel this is the closest possible answer. Since God is, he(she) must have desired to exist. To desire existence is vanity. Therefore God is a vain God. Vanity is a love for oneself. So, this divine source of spirituality has that in common with us. Vanity. One must first love himself before he can love his brother. That is why in the bible he is called a jealous God. Because this divine power existed from the beginning, then there is also non existence, just like ying/yang. “God” or the divine source of life is the original creation that all else has come from. Perhaps and most likely it did occur with a big bang. Imagine all of the universes energy manifesting itself in a moments eye. Explosions of energy spiraling and shockwaving through the void. That is what God is. The divine source of energy that initially set LIFE into motion and continues to create abundantly. Everything on this planet follows God’s course, except for some humans. We may do so if we choose, but we have the choice. Plants, Animals, Minerals, Water, Wind. they are already perfected, fulfilling their eternal destinies. Why do we as humans muddy the waters and not join in this exuberant celebration of life?
I am a christian. I am an evolutionist. and the only religion is LOVE. Who cares about creationsim or evolution? Are you really that nitpicky that you are going to damn somebody you don’t even know because they believe creatures adapt and change to their environments? Science and true Christianity go hand in hand. The only reason people can find disparities is because they lack true wisdom. Modern Christianity is no longer spiritual. We have taken manmade rituals and blocked our rightful birthright in the universe by allowing money making priests to decide your eternal fate. Lose your ego, and find who you truly are.
oldest son is gay
I see the face of a future fascist.
I am a Christian and I found it sad to see that this girl is literally obsessed with heaven and hell. The only reason she gives for being good and following the bible is that if we don’t, we will just end up in hell. What about wanting to be a good person and helping others? I hope that she learn more and tries to question her faith. I used to believe in everything she believed in, but when I was old enough I began questioning things that don’t make sense. The whole thing about a person who tells a small lie and ends up going into hell with other people who have committed rape and murder did not make sense to me. Then I read Dante’s inferno, I thought that it made more sense. The whole 7 hells and 7 heaven things. Now I just admit to myself that I will never know what happens after we die. The whole, taking the bible literally stupid. I’m sorry to those who do, but I have one thing to say to you. the bible has been changed over the years. In fact at one point the masses did not have access to the bibles! It was forbidden, and they couldn’t read anyways. Changes to the bibles could have been made while it was forbidden, in fact not taking that into account the bible is still not the same. They didn’t have photo copiers back then, if they wanted to make a copy of the bible, they had to write it by hand. Mistakes could have and were probably made. Or someone could have easily changed something about it. Oh and the big bang thing, there is a reason its called a big bang THEORY. Plus who said God didn’t create the big bang? People are stupid if they believe in that? I’m sorry but believing in a book that people wrote about God and taking it literally seems pretty stupid to me. Humans wrote the bible, not God. I’m sure there was no flash of lightning and the book just appeared out of nowhere. This is not to say there is something wrong with Christianity, in fact I like Christianity. But over the centuries true Christianity has been warped and now there are so many sects within Christianity when there shouldn’t be because the true teaching of Christianity is to love your fellow humans. Religious fanatics make me ashamed to call myself a Christian.
Sharon, four things you said I find intriguing:
1) Now I just admit to myself that I will never know what happens after we die.
Response: This is exactly true. Because you will be dead, you will never know. There is nothing special about humans that would allow for us to break every law of physics and nature and survive past death. This is one of the biggest lies, and most appealing, of religions.
2)What about wanting to be a good person and helping others?
Response: Most of us don’t need a made-up deity to do this. In fact, the need for it implies a fear of one’s own moral character. If people who feel thsi fear of themselves spent some time trying to find out what is bothering them about their morals instead of praying to some idol and letting the fear of that idol guide them, the world would be a much better place.
3)Oh and the big bang thing, there is a reason its called a big bang THEORY.
Response: What actually happens is that once scientists get hold of a good concept they gradually refine and extend it with a greater and greater subtlety as their instruments of measurement improve. Theories are not so much wrong as incomplete.
Gravity is still called a theory, but no one doubts gravity. Still, we do not know its workings fully, thus it still has to be called a theory. The same thing applies for the big bang. There are varying theories on it and no one claims to know what it was or how it came about, but all observations point to it, so we use it and try to find evidence that either supports or refutes it.
I would suggest a cosmology course to help you understand where we currently stand on this. New instruments will soon allow us even more precise observations, which will further refine the facts. This time in human history is by far the most exciting in this field.
4) [Multi-part]
a) The whole, taking the bible literally stupid…I’m sorry but believing in a book that people wrote about God and taking it literally seems pretty stupid to me.
b) Humans wrote the bible, not God.
Response: I hate to break it to you, Sharon, but you are actually not a Christian. The whole part about the Book being the Word of God? One of the very foundations of that religion.
You, for some reason, as well as many, many others, are seem to feel a need to apologize for Christianity while, at the same time, you say you don’t believe in its principal tenets. This happens amazingly often and is the biggest reason these outdated religions continue to claw their way into society.
Just be good, for goodness’s sake, and you’ll be happier and a better person.
Why are people commenting on Deb and/or Christianity instead of the quality of the doc? That’s disappointing.
The doc is quite good, imo. The makers got excellent access and candid comments from all. It’s a nice transgression from her home life to the “big city” and her experiences there are fascinating. Just when I felt it might be starting to drag or rehash the same material, it ends. And a very good ending too.
Well worth the hour.
Is the quality of the doc more important than the subject matter? That’s not why I watch documentaries.
LOL I love the British teen population. Maybe they need more girls like this. I’m Canadian and i remember my first time walking around Belfast and having 13-17 year old boys yelling “Fuck baby you fit” smoking and being obnoxious. I had to wear a ring on my wedding ringer so they wouldn’t follow me back to mine and my boyfriend house. And I wasn’t the best teenager ever but the worst of my friends can’t compare to there twats.
Twats? That’s not a very nice thing to say and I’m not a teenager. I live in Britain and I find those (Twats) actually make up for the minority of our over all (13-17yrs) population. Please I implore do not judge all by the actions of a few. it’s common sense that not all teenagers are going to be well behaved as is the case with all teenagers, in every country worldwide.

Sorry these twats*
Honestly , it’s families like this that usually have a gay/lesbian child who eventually comes out and helps mend the cognitive dissonance these Christians feel between ‘living the word of God’ and accepting thier child’s sexuality.
I’m an openly gay male who grew up in a staunchly Catholic family. For this reason, i could never, nor will i ever, believe in a book that may in fact contain much truth, yet is undeniably altered by man throughout time given the relative historical perspective of that era. I never chose to be born this way, nor do I believe I’m going to hell because of it.
Now I’m not saying the oldest brother is gay, but my radar definitely went off with his mannerisms. I could be wrong, but man I sure do hope he is gay for the sake of his family’s (and those children’s) mental evolution.
What’s up with the weirdo’s that type nonsense on this site?

Are you serious? How do you spell punctuation moron. Take your own advise mate. And chill, it’s a forum not an English test. Jeez, some people.
agreed, but *advice
the dad makes me laugh…the bible was written a few years after jesus was crucified…well how is the old testement the book that jesus used to teach from then? as the jewish torrah is the old testament ?
Although I don’t like the subject matter I love the editing, shooting, and documentary quality
This is borderline child abuse.
…creationism frustrates me to my very core…its pathetic and ridiculous…science is not a belief like religion its fact…we didnt live with the dinosaurs a few thousand years ago…
i find indoctrinating your children is very wrong and unfair to the kids…its ok to be religious but there showing the children a false sence of what the world is…the world is about getting along with others and this is something they are not learning as they go right to judging people who dont believe the same things they do…the 10 commandments dont even relate to the world today…most are about not believing in another god and a few important ones are clearly left out…what about rape…this poor girl is going to get a reality check when she goes into the real world…its very sad…evangelics are the worst for indoctrining their children…some act possesed and speak in tongues and the poor kids dont know any different and do it also…its just very sad…jesus camp is a very good doc also
It is a documentary on Nell, and she can speak now!
Miss Chick-a-bee. Lay-oat’n hiii, lay-oat’n nayahww…
Miss Chick-a-bee. Lay-oat’n hiii, lay-oat’n nayahww…
I’m guessing you’re an American that only knows the world from Hollywood and Fox. 99.99% of British people do not speak like you think they do mate. This guy probably speaks like that because of the way he was raised. Go to Moss Side in Manchester and then tell me you think we all speak like that. Narrow minded fool.
You know, there are some of us Americans who are more worldly and open minded and understand culture outside of Hollywood, etc. I find this insulting that narrow minded people like you from other countries alway pull the “ignorant American” card. I don’t think you are a beer chugging, toothless hooligan, so please stop putting Americans down. Thanks, mate!
So much brainwashing going on. It’s really sad. Things like this should be considered child abuse.
I don’t think he’s gay. British people all seem gay.
oh he is so gay!! that’s the only reason he sat down when Katy perry’s i kissed a girl and i liked it came on . . . on a serious note though – did anyone else feel like he was just playing the dutiful christian for the documentary but was in actual fact living it up away from the family. He certainly didn’t have the strong views his sister has otherwise he would have tried converting all his friends and probably not had any left to meet his sister.
It is definitely sad to see someone who is obviously articulate, bleating off the exact words of her parents without a single individual thought (you could hear her father bleating the have u ever lied line at the puppet show.) Its rather too simple. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having out there beliefs, most of us do in one capacity=city or another, but to actively encourage your child to go out and try and canvas support for a very outdated and one sided view point is not exactly great parenting.
And lets not get started on the view they have on schools being like orphanages . . . but it does seem that they are all about generalizing so . . . .
What an ignorant & bigoted comment, which certainly says more about you than it does about Britains.
Really? Whens the last time you bummed a fag? Or smoked one for that matter? And i think you mean “British” not “Britians”.
PS. This, like the first comment was meant as a JOKE. So don’t get your pretty pink thong in a bunch, you overly-sensitive tea-drinker. ;p
I’m guessing you’re not British as “Britains” was the correct word to use, you also spelt it wrong. You would probably be surprised that we don’t all drink tea, I drink about 20 cups of coffee a day. My guess is your American, we all seem to have misconceptions about each other. I’m sure you’re all not coke sniffing, gun mad, narcissistic, Jesus freaks.
“spelt” & “your” are both spelled incorrectly….
…You sir, are an imbecile. First off, after being too immature to understand when someone is taking a friendly jibe, even after its intent is stated, you decide to go on the defensive. Right after claiming that we have misconceptions about one another, you ironically invalidate your own position by declaring “Americans like to poke fun at anyone that isn’t American.” and “American humour doesn’t rise much above the toilet level.”
Can you please tell me where Monty Python comes from? Red Dwarf? Black Adder? Faulty Towers? Oh, im sorry. I didn’t realize that british people were a bunch of stuffy elitists that were above laughing at low-brow humor, or making fun of others. All these years i wrongly assumed that british people were a fairly humorous bunch.
You then set an astonishingly retarded self imposed standard for what humor is not -“Poking fun at other people isn’t humour, it’s childish.”
You see, i live in the first nation to adopt an official policy of multiculturalism in the world. (Ill let you figure it out) And i hate to break it to you but the way many people bond is through making fun of one another. Its human nature.
When you talk about this american toilet humor being childish, it is either because you clearly lack the ability to infer the social and political criticisms that underpin said “toilet humor”. (Basically your the guy who watches South Park and doesn’t get it.) Or its because you want to enforce what you consider to be “right” humor on others. Either way, your a tool.
Ah yes, i concede i was wrong about “Britains”, how stupid of me. A thousand apology’s.
So if your comment was a jibe, why take such offence and go on a rant? Especially as the comment seemed to be in fairly good spirit, unlike yours. I sense a bit of passive/aggressive behaviour there. Wikepedia informs me you’re Canadian (yes, I’m lazy). I repeat: re-read both posts and you’ll see your rant was pretty unnecessary and perhaps aimed elsewhere?
No, I do get the point, Americans like to poke fun at anyone that isn’t American. And as far as I can tell American humour doesn’t rise much above the toilet level. Poking fun at other people isn’t humour, it’s childish.
Well, at least you agree to being childish…
Well, at least you agree to being childish…
“You would probably be surprised that we don’t all drink tea,… blah, blah.” I think you missed the point but then again trying to explain humor to “Britains” is like kicking water uphill. You aren’t going to win, Xenu.
You were just joking but the over-sensitive part is spot-on. Some ppl just dont know how to take a joke.
Hes right about the wordage though. So at least you two have an anality about proper language in common. lol
I wouldn’t give them too much credit for proper language. After all, they both used ‘your’ as a contraction.
Ramus: ‘My guess is your American, we all seem to have misconceptions about each other.’
Xenu: ‘Either way, your a tool.’
On a positive note, I found something you both have in common! You can build on it and become best buddies. You’re welcome!

Good grief feelsorry4me… Sin = to err and or to miss the mark. Look it up! Brain damaged Christian fool
The parents are brainwashing the kids its as simple as that , what’s going to happen when the oldest son comes out of the closet ????
Whats the point in saying their brainwashing their children? Any adult that grew up with their parents were brainwashed by their parents.
I suppose the difference is they might have a difficult time functioning in society, on the other hand, not like they’ll end up being unproductive members of society and gangsters.

In response to the comments below. You people are completely wrong. You couldn’t be more wrong about anything in your lives. Jesus said ” wide is the way that leadth to destruction and many will go, but narrow is the way that leadth to life and few will find it.” You think by insulting something you don’t accept or believe in will automatically make it false or not true? You are wrong. Dead wrong. Read the king James version of the Bible if you want to know the truth. These days everything has become corrupted and that includes the gospel. If you are learning about God or Jesus from the wrong source you will go astray and turn away from the truth. Stay away from the catholic church. They are not following the Bible.
The bible!
The
single most effective method for creating Atheists ever conceived by man.
Jesus
said…? What did he write? What did he sign? There is not even a contemporary
mention of him outside the bible, a book compiled by anonymous authors and
copied, redacted and modified by a long line of crooks and liars.
The gospels were corrupt from the beginning and in any case are a made up story. If you wnt to quote words attributed to JC. Then –
Matt 17:20 You can move mountains with a grain of faith- never seen a Xian move anything.
Luke14:26 Hate your family?
and
the verse that state ‘I have not come to bring peace but a sword.
also
All shall come to pass before THIS generation has passed.
How do you rationalize such awful and contradictory verses, only the application of cognitive dissonance can achieve this.
EG: You are chocking do you want me to pray for you or do the Heimlich Maneuver? If the science is all so wrong how can you use a car or plane or go to a doctor ever.? It is called hypocrisy!
Man if’n he ain’ outta da closet by now…the parents are just a blind as the kids…
He’ll become a priest…
lol

Why are people down-voting the Christians here? It’s not like any of them have said anything offensive. Atheists and secularists need to stop being so tribalist all the time.
I know right! I mean all of our atheist churches and shrines are starting to pepper the world at an alarming rate . . . someone better put a stop to all that tribal behavior dare they start to send those believers to . . . counseling? / the job center? ( I’m really not sure where our atheist hell would be but probably a greasy spoon on the outskirts of Birmingham) We still lack a members only area in the sky but I think there might be somewhere for us on second life . . .
Out of the 6 letters I see above, 4 of them disclose that they ARE Christians and all of them are supportive of the girl, but simply have some reservations
about what they saw. The other 2 people? – 1 identified herself as non- religious and the other didn’t say one way or the other. Nobody was insulting and even possible criticism was offered thoughtfully. So, this complainer has
me concerned about his/her mental health. If she/he is seeing conflict where
there is none, imagine what happens to him/her when there really is something critical or mean going on – major meltdown, I’d guess.
I’m more concerned about your comprehension than the complainer’s mental health. You realise she was talking about the rating the comments were getting, right? Not the actual comments.
Holy crap. (lol) Go read the comment again. LOL. Maby you should be concerned with your own comprehension of three straight-forward simple sentences.
No, this is not open to interpretation, sweetheart. The assertion that anyone who could disagree with certain comments must be an atheist, or non-christian is in fact a remark on the comments themselves and not on the ratings.
Iv never actually had to explain a concept this simple on this site before. 8S A little critical thought goes a long way.>
Why would the down-voters have to be non-Christian?
