There are some who believe that Darwin’s theory of evolution has weakened religion, fuelled in part by Richard Dawkins’ publishing phenomenon The God Delusion. Conor Cunningham argues that nothing could be further from the truth. Cunningham is a firm believer in the theory of evolution, but he is also a Christian. He believes that the clash between Darwin and God has been hijacked by extremists – fundamentalist believers who reject evolution on one side, and fundamentalist atheists on the other.

Cunningham attempts to overturn what he believes are widely held but mistaken assumptions in the debate between religion and evolution. He travels to the Middle East where he shows that from the very outset, Christianity warned against literal readings of the biblical story of creation. In Britain, he reveals that, at the time, Darwin’s theory of evolution was welcomed by the Anglican and Catholic Churches.

Instead, he argues that the conflict between Darwin and God was manufactured by American creationists in the 20th century for reasons that had very little to do with science and religion and a great deal to do with politics and morality. Finally, he comes face to face with some of the most eminent evolutionary biologists, geneticists and philosophers of our time to examine whether the very latest advances in evolutionary theory do in fact kill God.

What is the problem with accepting the bible as historically literal.

Also, I have never heard God referred to as bigger and better versions of us only that we were created in his image. This could mean a number of things, all of which are unimportant in the grand scheme of things. It only matters why we were created and that we accept that God created us not that we evolved.

Science makes life on earth complicated and wants us to put faith in it’s conclusions yet so much of what we’ve accepted as scientific “fact” has been proven wrong time and time again. This is the absolute truth. Science can be so cocky as to dismiss, shun, discredit, and reject any idea until it is proven a fact then science tries to profit from it.

The problem with accepting the Bible of historically literal is obvious, it is a flawed, self-contradictory text. Science may be wrong as much as any other discipline, but at least it is searching for the truth, not blindly following a book.

Incidentally, should we follow other footnotes from the bible? Such as Moses choosing to slaughter various peoples except for the women and virgins? Or the selling of children for grain?

What’s wrong with life on earth being complicated?

By the way, if you happen to be chatting to the pope ask him what’s wrong with Harry Potter. Why is his magic ok and J.K. Rowling’s isn’t?

I couldn’t have responded better…. But, to add to your point about science searching for the truth I believe it is important that CBig1969 realises that it does so by trying to disprove a hypothesis. If you watch   the documentary titled Darwin and the Tree of Life, for example, you realise Darwin tried to prove the theory of evolution wrong, which, ultimately, proved that it was right.

He scrutinised every detail of his theory before writing the Origin of Species so that nobody would be able to pick apart what he had discovered. He had so much evidence that any question that would be raised by anyone religious was answered within his text. The man was a genius and he was spot on. WE DID EVOLVE. On the other hand, as you (Gravedig) said, the bible contradicts itself time and time again. And it just tells people to have ‘faith’ that it and all that is written in it is correct without any legitimate proof. CBig1969 – why are you so sure evolution did not happen? Have you ever tried to learn anything for yourself ever? Or do you just blindly believe what you are told. Do your research in future. Or how about you try and use your bible to tell me how our DNA is around 99% the same to that of a chimpanzee? Because you won’t find an answer…

I’m really getting tired of Christians molesting science and turning it into something it’s not. Stop regurgitating tired rhetoric and actually study science for once.

What can science do?  It can’t do a damn thing. They can’t even find a cure for Aids. Anybody would be a fool to put all your trust in science. Don’t put your trust in science. Put your trust in what you see with your own eyes. They’ve been trying for more than a century to prove evolution and they can’t do it. How can you prove a lie true.? Charles Darwin was a presbyterian minister before he became two-faced with the theory of evolution. Thats something  they don’t want people to find out. You need to wake up. You are living in a dream world. In fact, everyone reading this needs to wake up and realize that science could not create this world. You would be a fool to believe that. And Why be a racist when it comes to religion and only target christians, when christians are not the only ones out there with a creationism doctrine. And christians were not the ones who attacked America on 911.

Cbig1969 you know nothing about science. The bible is a book of fairytales written 2000 years ago by sheperds.  Science is the only thing we can hold asmomentanealy true

Ddhs – not disagreeing we you, but there’s a lot to be said for this part of movie description: “the conflict between Darwin and God was manufactured by American
creationists in the 20th century for reasons that had very little to do
with science and religion and a great deal to do with politics”

American politics, recently led by fundmenalists, have caused untold misery acorss the globe.

There is one huge problem that the presenter is completely ignoring. If the story of Genesis is fictional as well as Adam and Eve then the doctrine of Original Sin is also mythological. This destroys the foundation of Christian Theology. In fact in the New Testament in Romans 6 it says “Through one man (Adam) sin entered the world and death through sin..”

So if that also is mythological then the death of Jesus was pointless as well. Christian Theology operates like a footstool with multiple legs, if you remove one, the whole thing collapses because they are interdependent on each other.
