Do You Want to Live Forever?

Aubrey David Nicholas Jasper de Grey (born 20 April 1963 in London, England) is a British biomedical gerontologist educated at Cambridge University in the UK.

He is the author of the Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging. He is now working to develop a tissue-repair strategy that would rejuvenate the human body and thereby allow an indefinite lifespan — a medical goal he calls engineered negligible senescence. To this end, he has identified seven tissue-damages caused by aging that need to be repaired medically before this can be done.

De Grey argues that the fundamental knowledge needed to develop effective anti-aging medicine mostly already exists, and that the science is ahead of the funding. He works to identify and promote specific technological approaches to the reversal of various aspects of aging, or as de Grey puts it, “the set of accumulated side effects from metabolism that eventually kills us,” and for the more proactive and urgent approaches to extending the healthy human lifespan. Regarding this issue, de Grey is a supporter of life extension.

As of 2005, de Grey’s work centered upon a detailed plan called Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) which is aimed at preventing age-related physical and cognitive decline. He is also the co-founder (with David Gobel) and chief scientist of the Methuselah Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Springfield, Virginia, United States.

A major activity of the Methuselah Foundation is the Methuselah Mouse Prize, a prize designed to hasten the research into effective life extension interventions by awarding monetary prizes to researchers who stretch the lifespan of mice to unprecedented lengths. Regarding this, de Grey stated in March 2005 “if we are to bring about real regenerative therapies that will benefit not just future generations, but those of us who are alive today, we must encourage scientists to work on the problem of aging.” The prize reached US$4.2 million in February 2007. De Grey believes that once dramatic life extension of already middle-aged mice has been achieved, a large amount of funding will be diverted to this kind of research, which would accelerate progress in doing the same for humans.

  1. Actually we humans can live forever – By staying absolutely healthy all the time – Any infections, allergies, cancers, diabetes, polio, TB, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and any other diseases, known on Earth, will be erased from the face of the planet in just a few days, if everybody (kids and adults) start doing my discovery (just an exercise for a minute a day – the greatest discovery of all time on Earth and maybe in the Universe) – My WVCD – The Weapon of Virus and Cancer Destruction – By far more powerful than the human immune system, keeping it intact all the time, for any pathogens are killed the moment they touch us – We humans will possess the Infinite Health and we will become Immortal – Just like the Extraterrestrials, like our Creators from the planet of Nibiru – The Anunnaki, if I am paid 5 billion bucks to disclose my discovery – Just 25 million bucks per country in the world – As a proof of the power of my discovery, for more than 5 years now, I never got sick even of the common cold, my blood sugar level is 300 mg/dl, but I am not sick of diabetes, for I cannot get sick of it, or of any other diseases – I am the healthiest person on the planet, I am absolutely free to eat any food I like, no restrictions whatsoever, doing my discovery for just a minute a day – The only way on Earth for everybody to stay absolutely healthy all the time and of course being Immortal, for Infinite Health = Immortality.

  2. Woody Allen said, “Eternity is a long time – especially towards the end.”

  3. i am a  year old and i think living forever is all well and good but will ruin us. Simply because procreating is an urge its very difficult if not impossible not to have ‘relations’ for lack of a polite term

living forever will change the way we think and what we value. also resources will be taxed and well when there isent enough resorces people start fighting. secondly changing the genes will change the species in itself shorting the reproduction of cells wil turn us into 70 cm people that are well just weird.

  5. Interesting. It’s free to talk about the possibilities we posses.  But, I agree with the Martin Raff; maybe because he’s missing the urge the procreate, he has this passion – almost he’s instinct – to live forever in order to keep his genes in pool. Overall, I think Aubrey sounds like a 16 year old child.

  9. A strange but interesting documentary! I’m quite disturbed about De Grey’s reasons for wanting immortality. The people who want to live forever in this doco are also such weirdos – I dunno if it’s a good thing having them hanging around FOREVER. It’s like a bad, annoying song that keeps playing and won’t stop! Dyson was right that it is a pretty selfish thing to do, but I don’t think these people care. What I worry about is, the people who can afford this ‘potential’ technology in the future may be those who are rich bankers, businessmen, powerful politicians, military dictators, royalty, influential doctors and lawyers, not middle class citizens or the poor! So much for ending the suffering of old age for everybody! It’s more like lengthening the lifespan of rich people who can afford it (I’m sure some of them will be a$$holes too).
