Seven years ago, on his third trip to the Black Sea, Dr. Robert Ballard discovered a miraculously well-preserved Byzantine shipwreck, but his team could only take pictures. Now, Ballard returns with state-of-the-art technology and a revolutionary $1.5 million robot known as “Hercules” to excavate two shipwrecks for the first time ever, including one of the most pristine ancient vessels ever found. Ballard and his team have only two weeks, so they must work in perfect precision on their hunt for the Ghost Ships of the Black Sea.

Is this about the crew or about the find? If i watch something like this i want to see what they discover not some fake drama about the crew.

although I enjoyed the film overall, I have to agree with you on that.  A lot of shipwreck discovery films stretch out the story of the explorers because there was really not too much to show of what remains of the ship; not that there is nothing down there, just that they don’t really have it set up to display on camera by the end of the film.  And I think that is naturally disappointing to those of us who want to see artifacts.

As all professional archeologists and students of the profession as well as those truly interested in the documenting and rediscoverying of such..It first takes a great deal of research and gentle careful exploring of any site (which may take months to decades) before all information is researched, explored, found, documented, careful recording of artifacts and dealing with the unexpected, such is the thrill of this discipline. Definitely enjoyed being shown the 1st of many to come, such sites in their infancy. A documentary is just that, documenting all the facts first. To view the final product will taked months, even years and I for one and hopefully many others would enjoy watching the progress, not only from the artifacts view but the real human drama that goes on as well. Remember, they did not not find ‘The Titanic; King Tuts’ Tomb; The Myan, Aztec, Ancient Cities, Artifacts of all disciplines in one day let alone one year..all the disciplines involved take time and patience and to allow the ordinary citizen of the Gobe have the privilege of going along with them should be appreciated..have patience I promise you there is much more to come as well as surprises for all involved; from the Professionals, Teachers, Students, Interns and of course the Global citizen. Thank you very much for this one of many to come documentaries. True history and the rediscovery of times now past will shortly come to an end, therefore I for one will enjoy every morsel of rediscovery in whatever format, guise, storytelling, human drama, etc., that will be made available by this wonderful site until rediscovery will end. Sincerely

One Who Appreciates This and other sites that allow me to go along with the explorerers, whatever their discipline, as I, like many are not educated thoroughly but enjoy and one who has no access to the dollars in Grants, etc., to even dream of going on one of these journeys. If you want to see the artifacts and discoveries then Patience will be your company and friend. Sit back and enjoy this profound privilege we have been given.

This was truly a fascinating documentary about how modern technology is being used to explore and open up our eyes to the mysteries of the Black Sea which is a very uniqure body of water. It has been used for hundreds of years as a major trade route throughout history and surely has some exciting stories to tell us. Although very little was removed from the discovery sites, only some ancient porceline jugs and some core samples, it showed the care and precautions being used to retreve information about the effects that have occured over a thousand years, at the bottom of the Black Sea. One must appreciate the quality of the retreval and not so much the quantity if we are to learn from this discovery and understand how the history of it all has lead us here. the fact that everything is so perfectly preserved is very exciting and I’m looking forward to viewing any future discoveries of this amazing area of our world…keep up the great work!
