I thought it obvious.

America has always had a ‘Good guy v bad guy’ view of the world, or put another way Cowboys with white and black hats.

Of course it sees itself as the Good guys, irresepctive of its own actions.

With the fall of the USSR it had find another bogeyman, and this meant inventing & creating threats. And a people from the other side of the world who were not fawning to the US was easy to demonise.

Iran – one of the oldest continous civilisations in the world that has never over thrown governments of foreign countries that is doesn’t like; has never invaded a country to sieze control of oil reserves; never used nuclear weapons; never instigated two global economic crises.
