Kasparov and The Machine

Garry Kasparov is arguably the greatest chess player who has ever lived. In 1997 he played a chess match against IBM’s computer Deep Blue. Kasparov lost the match. This film shows the match and the events surrounding it from Kasparov’s perspective. It delves into the psychological aspects of the game, paranoia surrounding it and suspicions that have arisen around IBM’s true tactics. It consists of interviews with Kasparov, his manager, chess experts, and members of the IBM Deep Blue team, as well as original footage of the match itself.

  1. You know that there are photos of the moon lander and rover that have been taken recently don’t you?
Oh right – I’m so stupid I don’t notice that they are all fakes too.

  2. I have no doubt that they cheated… the americans have a tendency to “fake it if you can’t make it”…. The kennedy assasination, the moon landing, the iraq oil war… Most of the public are so stupid that they don’t notice anything anyway.

  3. ‘Deepblue’ actually was my username even before I saw this doco.. how weird! Awesome documentary; highly intriguing and a wonderful story, well told! I was left feeling very sorry for the vanquished; Kasparov is a true genius, worth a million IBM programmers!

  4. I’m more of a monopoly man myself. I like a bit of boggle sometimes too

  6. Good doc.

Shame about the last caption “Gary is still the greatest chess player that ever lived.” The makers can’t say that, and they shouldn’t be. Detracts from the doc at the end point, an important place.

And it would have been nice, after using so much imagery of the fake chess charlatan, if that was revealed a little more.

  7. the mighty Kasparov…
