The Most Hated Family in America is a TV documentary written and presented by the BBC’s Louis Theroux about the family at the heart of the Westboro Baptist Church.
At the heart of the documentary is the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), headed by Fred Phelps and based in Topeka, Kansas. It runs the website GodHatesFags.com,[1] and GodHatesAmerica.com, and other websites expressing condemnation of LGBT, Roman Catholics, Muslims, Jews, Sweden, Ireland, Canada, The Netherlands, and other groups. The organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League,[2] and classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.[3][4] The group has achieved national notice because of its picketing of funeral processions of U.S. soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The church bases its work around the belief expressed by its best known slogan and the address of its primary website, “God hates fags”, and expresses the opinion, based on its Biblical interpretation, that nearly every tragedy in the world is God’s punishment for homosexuality – specifically society’s increasing tolerance and acceptance of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. It maintains that God hates homosexuals above all other kinds of “sinners”[5] and that homosexuality should be a capital crime.[6]
Louis Theroux stated that the Phelpses are the most extreme people he has ever met.[7]

It just makes me so happy to know that there are christian zealots out there; that it’s not just the muslims and the jews. Man, I felt so bad for the kids who have to go to school and be alienated everyday. It’d almost be better to be home schooled than be confronted with the real world and how unlikable their message is day in and day out. When the older girl choked up and when the little one got hit with a slurpee– it’s easy for the parents to hang out together and ignore the world, but the girls who can’t even go get coffee? They know that if they tried to make an outside friend their family would alienate them quickly with their message. It seems like if those girls met some nice people outside the family they’d be nice, but they’re trapped in that life and isolated.

This horrific “Church” should have ALL children removed and placed in NORMAL society to at least be given a chance to heal & try to retain somewhat of a Normal Life.
I personally have no religious belief but I certainly don’t hold a grudge toward people who do. We all need to find/gather hope from somewhere but being a part of such a miserable bunch of No-Gooder (or I dare say No-Godders) is just plain outrageous..!!

What Theroux seemed to dismiss without sufficiently careful consideration is whether the interpretation of the Bible promulgated by the WBC might, in fact, be a biblically and theologically justified perspective. The orthodox Calvinism that they hold represents a living tradition. The biblical conservatism is well represented in America and throughout Christian history. A theonomic approach to penology is a minority, though legitimate, perspective on the relationship between the Old and New Testaments. And ”homosexuality as an abomination” is a clear deduction from the Scripture if one holds to inerrancy. Additionally, freedom of speech, religion and assembly are Constitionally protected. Although I am an atheist and disagree with both their “doctrine and life”, I don’t believe it is true or intellectually honest to assert that what they maintain lacks biblical authority, historical precedent, or logical coherence. Culturally out-of-sync? Without a doubt. The fact that they still support higher education for their children is a source of hope. Education and respectful dialogue – rather than hatred and bigotry in kind – is the only possible path forward.

I am thankful to my future husband (God willing) for sharing this movie and his insight with me. I have watched the film, certain parts twice, and I can see their (WBC’s) point. Homosexuality is forbidden in all of the monotheistic religions. I can see that they want to be warners. Everything does come from God. There are valuable messages and lessons in this documentary for those willing to see them. As for what they are saying, their basic message is the harsh truth, although at the surface, it comes across as harsh, rude, mean, and disrespectful. Most people wont like the message and will be offended. However, Freedom of speech is a right given to americans by the constitution. Picketting, protesting, being the ‘louder voice’ is the ‘american way’. They are not doing anything wrong, they are exercising their right. Who are any of you to take their right away? We are a democracy not dictatorship (well we are supposed to be anyway). The Phelps are doing what they know to do. The point is, they are doing something, instead of sitting back complaining! I have respect for the fact that, despite what they have to deal with, they aren’t giving up saying ‘oh well we tried’. Do I agree with the way they are presenting their information? No. Do I believe their Egos are playing a part? Yes. Do I believe Louis filmed this with an agenda? Yes. He might have covered the story far better if he had been objective in learning the truth. Maybe spent less time trying to convert them. Of course this is my opinion. I would have liked to hear from those who left the church. God will judge us all individually on who will go to Heaven or Hell. It is not for them (wbc)or any other human to make that call. They can warn of the possibility or probability. According to Scriptures the only unforgivable sin is associating partners with God. Which unfortunately, is exactly what WBC is doing. May God guide them to the truth, Ameen.Now in saying that i have very close family members who are gay/lesbian. I struggle with this issue myself. I know its a sin, yet they are my family. How can I be happy and satisfied with the thought of the possibility of someone I love going to hell? I can advise, but to what extent without risking my relationship with them? The thought scares me to say nothing. The members of WBC dont seem to care if people hate them or if kinship is broken, they are going to speak what they believe is the truth, and leave the rest up to God. Like I said earlier, there are lessons to be learned here. They aren’t doing it perfectly, they are humans after all, but at least they are doing something.

You know what, the irony of freedom of speech is that it’s a terrible idea, people are so wrapped up in their own ignorance to have that right, a racist who is stupid enough to believe that knowing one black person means you know them all should NOT have the right to preach their hatred, all we have ever done is hate and in order to advance as a society and a species we can’t allow those seeds to be planted.
I have travelled the world and lived in several different countries, I speak 3 languages and have been integrated into several other cultures and you want to tell me that these guys are entitled to blast off angry, hateful messages based on some bitter old man who can’t face the questions that attack his beliefs. He is a coward, not some strong guardian of the truth, he wouldn’t be able to have a conversation with me, he’d repeat the same lines that he taught to everyone else. You think those people are a good source of information on how the whole world is based on a life lived almost entirely in a closed-up brainwashing family.
The truth is they don’t know the world, not even close, they read the bible and saw hate, mostly from the old testament, which, if you are a CHRISTian, is before the story even started. I am not deeply religious, I have decided not to follow the words of men hoping to see the words of God, I have translated texts myself and know how it can come out.
So, I conclude:
Those people have caused pain to everyone around them and even to their own children who are visibly dying inside through their denial, some already left and some of the others will quieten every question in their minds.
They have a book that has been translated so many times, that an old man read and focused on preaching hate to man, the ridiculous nature of this is that it says VERY clearly “LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR”, they are not following the bible, they think they are the only holy people on earth, when the truth is, they are just ignorant people.
If they were even capable of arguing properly you could take them down using the very book they claim to follow, it’s all contradicted later.
That aside, on a logical basis, nothing they are saying is even logical, let alone “the truth”.
They are ridiculous, and if you think that them seeing the bad things in this world and hating on everyone for it, painting them with the same brush, is insightful then you are clearly as closed minded and deluded as them.
Seeing their point in this doesn’t require an open mind, or the ability to think out the box, in fact, it’s requires quite the opposite.
Ridiculous, 1000000000000000 times, ridiculous.
Free speech can go f**k itself if all it does is protect people who are too stupid to even have tongues whose goal it is to destroy our society.
They say they want to warn people, here’s my last point just so you can see that the heart of their operation is flawed:
To Warn means to give advise or council to help avoid something.
