Welcome to the new Documentary Heaven!

As you have probably noticed we have given the site an awl face lift. It may seem strange initially but we hope overall you are going to find your visits here far more enjoyable. We aim to make Documentary Heaven more of community rich in discussion and debate, giving everyone a chance to voice themselves. To reinforce this we plan to fully integrate a new forum, which will have a site wide login allowing users to have a far more fluid experience. (The forums are currently disabled until this is complete) A few features are currently unavailable until everything is sorted so apologies for the inconvenience, we plan to have everything running very shortly!

Anyway in the mean time we hope you like the new design.

Also as the design is brand new there could be bugs and if you find any it would be much appreciated if you could let us know.

Please let us know what you think as we will be tweaking things here and there adding extra bits and pieces so if you feel we left something out don’t be afraid to tell us and we will try do our best to improve on the design.

Thanks,

-Danny

there’s no need for the ‘watch’ word underneath the videos – if people see a video thumbnail they expect it to play when they click on it

Agreed, i initially had the title under the thumbnail but had an issue with trimming the length so just have watch there until i can solve this problem.

on the other hand it is always good to have the word watch on your page for search engines. People will google “watch ‘documentary here’ online”. At least put this keyword in the page somewhere.

Honestly, I like the old layout with bigger thumbnails. In my eye it is more appealing than the new design. The new design is like a video blog which is very common these days.

Thanks for letting us know, its much appreciated as all comments will help me improve on the design.

I do understand what your saying alright and the last thing i want the site to be is just another video blog but i really felt the last design was seriously lacking in functionality also seemed a bit gloomy and there wasn’t much interaction between users. These where the main reasons i decided to redesign the site as i really want the site to feel like a community.

Also i will definitely look into making the thumbnails bigger.

I hope the design hasn’t turned you off the site in anyway :D , but keep the comments coming because i really want to hear what you all think so i can do my best to make the site an enjoyable one for everyone.

      Thanks again.

Hi, congrats for your website. I like it a lot. About the new design, I found the black background more ad hoc for a “movie” or docu site. The structure I like it though.

Cheers, yeah a dark background does help when watching videos thats why im planning on implementing a lights out feature which will dim the whole screen besides the video itself. Ill try get this running asap.

What i miss in themes like this, is a litte discription of the documentary. Overall i like this theme better then the old one. The colors are a bit brighter i think. But to really give a good comment i would have to see the old one next to it :D

Well if you click on browse documentaries you will find there is a fairly large description for each one. I will probably add a short description to the main videos on the homepage sometime this weekend :) . Thanks.

Well, clean and simple is always a good thing, but I do wish I could see a bit of the description again. I’d really like it if like netflix one could hover and the full description would pop up for quick review. no clicking back and forth. btw, this is a great site. I really enjoy and appreciate it a great deal, and I’ve referred several friends and clients. Thanks!

I like the new design, but one feature I would love to see is an organization of the documentaries by year, and as shorts or feature length productions.

I think I prefer the old page better. Here are a few reasons:

    1) VIDEO DESCRIPTIONS! the old page had a description of the videos below them. that was informative. the new style has barely the title in it, and you have to mouse over to see the title. i would rather have the WHOLE title and description WITHOUT having to mouse over, like before.

    2) black background. i like to watch documentaries at night. a bright white background around the video is blinding. if i turn my display down to reduce the background intensity, i lose definition in the video.

    3) larger thumbnails. smaller does not improve anything, but since it is a single frame, it really isn’t a huge deal. i preferred the larger pictures better. add more than 9 videos per page would be nice too.

    4) smaller stuff to the right. the “categories” of the different genres was in a small font before. you didn’t have to scroll down a mile to see them all.

    5) no social media stuff. i know its the web 2.0 thing to do, and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, but please remove the social media junk. it’s cheesy. i know you had a big facebook link before, but that was unnecessary too. i’d also like to say that i think the “comments” section is useless. no one comments on stuff. the “being watched now” kind of stuff is borderline. it’s as if you are trying to facebook-ize this site with comments and favorites and stuff. bleh.

I think that Documentary Heaven has a good thing going for it. It’s a great resource for people who want to flex their brain and think about stuff, rather than the most-viewed eye candy on the front of YouTube. But, it feels like you are trying to focus on a Facebook kind of world. Of course I use Facebook all the time, but I am not here for that.

I hope I didn’t hurt anyone’s feelings, you’ve obviously put a lot of design into this. I just think it is misguided.

Hey its appreciated that you took the time to let us know how you feel about the design and i now will try and cover each point you made.

1)If you click on browse documentaries you will see there is a much larger description available then ever before and i will be adding descriptions to the main page videos soon.

2)Yeah i totally understand where your coming from with the darker background and i agree it is better for viewing documentaries at night this is why i hope to be adding a “lights off” button which will dim the whole page except for the documentary itself giving the everyone a far better viewing experience.

3)In “browse documentaries” you get the full size thumbnail and once i get around to adding the description i will figure out what size is best.

4)I will tinkering around with this alright to try and get a nice size.

5)Well here is where i have to disagree im afraid. You see this site were it not for social media & word of mouth would be nowhere near the size it is today. I cant afford to pay for advertising so i always would like to encourage people to tell their friends about us or whoever may be interested & this really works wonders. When i see a active users it motivates me to keep pumping fresh documentaries into the site. So i would feel it works out for everyone.

I feel the comments section is a very important part of the site and i would have to disagree with you in saying no one comments. Everyday i get tons of emails saying new comment on such and such a video. It allow people to express their point of view. I personally always enjoy reading the comments, they can even help you make up your mind on whether it is worth while to watch a certain documentary.

The goal by having the being watched now type elements on the homepage is to bring old documentaries back to life as many people hate having to scroll through the vast number of pages. I feel many people enjoy these features.

I think you should look at this design as being in a beta stage and I hope to solve all the issues that may arise to make the site better. This is why i am glad to see so many people letting me know what they think as it really does help in making this site a better one.
      Thanks.

Sorry but I DON’T like it. The thumbnails are great but titles hardly ever fit into their fields, which is impractical and looks lame too. Please do something about those titles being cut off.

I’m usually not one to criticize new designs, but this is really an atrocity. The old site was instantly recognizable as a decent resource for documentaries without much bullshit. The new design looks like as if you switched to a web 2.0 cluttered random blog template. I don’t want to be needlessly rude; I just get the feeling if I would stumble upon this wonderful page today, I might never have thought about it twice.

To give you at least some constructive critique, I’d suggest you redesign the front page so that the latest documentaries are completely visible without scrolling down. Those 252 pixels for a useless banner are a complete waste. Beyond that I don’t see a way to get rid of the random blog appearance, without redesigning everything.

Dear Friends, overall I like the new design for the site which is much brighter and seems to be inviting more commenst, but the home page is not good at all.

It’s hardly possible to see if the video is really of interest when it’s difficult to read the title and the description is so short.

I have now made Browse Documentaries my home page :-) . That poage is very good and the list is useful also. Perhaps listing my length or year, etc. would also be helpful.

Anyway I am sure all visitors and very grateful for the time you spend putting the site together. Well done!

Hey cheers for the constructive feedback, its much appreciated. Admittedly the homepage is a bit of a work in progress because I receive many suggestions so im trying to get the right balance at the moment. I will look into making the descriptions and the titles longer.

Also duration and year is a very good idea! Once I get the time I will look into setting these up.

      Thanks.

I got sucked into a wow-pool recently and missed all these changes happening, after visiting the site since last year by stumbling upon it. I exploded in instant joy when I quickly realised what this site was, and like Anti-theist so strongly put, looking at the front page now, I’m not so sure I wouldn’t mis-interpret it.

I like the features and functionality you’ve added (though I have yet to explore them fully, you may hear back), but I think the farcebook colour scheme is my biggest turn-off. You have a wonderful creation here and looking like you’re sucking up to fb doesn’t help and isn’t necessary.

Furthermore, the buttons (however decorative) beside links to popular pages/videos, and links to categories, should be different. They look like two categories of one thing, to the uncommitted eye with a stumble hotkey. The category button should be grander, since one category instance contains many of the other buttoned entity.
One more thing you might try would be enlarging and putting the main heading within your screens panorama, because right now they’re fighting for attention and the heading lost, even though I knew it should be there. I think facebook has trained my eye to look within the white blob for all my information.

Lastly, tiny colourful buttons do not impress me. I may be alone in that but it’s the reason I stopped using ICQ many years ago. If I can find all your functions without my eyes being sandpapered then you’re doing well. Fb is losing ground there. It’s the colour contrast that gets me, picking a shade and sticking with it just seems slicker. It’s the internet equivalent of Entropic Heat Death, and IMHO it’d be shrewd to avoid that trap, not that I’m saying you’re too far in it yet.

I’ve also just left a site where all there was left to do was argue, so I may have put things stronger than necessary just for elegance, but I’ve endeavoured to cite my reasons.

Good luck with the mint new site! I’m glad youre so open to collaboration. Very 2.0 lol

I am afraid this is due to the fact that there currently is no official version of flash player for ipads, iphones, etc. at this time. Which is a real pain. Although I currently am looking into the possibility of creating an app for the site but that would be some time in the future.

I understand where you are going and see the need to shift to a more inviting interface but I think this page needs refinement still. My only concern it is appears very “bloggish” and plain. I like the light colors but maybe add some edges and make the different aspects of the page really stand out for easier navigation. I love the site though!
