Beneath the surface of the world, are the rules of science. But beneath them, there is a far deeper set of rules – a matrix of pure mathematics which explains the nature of the rules of science and how it is way we can understand them in the first place. In this one-off documentary, David Malone looks at four brilliant mathematicians – Georg Cantor, Ludwig Boltzmann, Kurt Gödel and Alan Turing – whose genius has profoundly affected us, but which tragically drove them insane and eventually led to them all committing suicide.

    This video was disappointing. It tries to rationalize theism not by providing evidence, but by trying to argue that there are paradoxes that can never be proven. I feel like I lost an hour of my life.

      @Luke,

      Sounds like an insecure materialist unwilling to admit the limitations of human knowledge. Not everything has to be turned into part of your pointless war on irrational beliefs, you don’t need to take every hole in the scientific narrative as a potential argument for theism. That makes no sense.

    One of the finest scientific documentaries I’ve seen in years. It is not trying to rationalise theism, and is merely presenting the huge advances in mathematical, logical and physical theories that deal with the problem of unpredictability and probability, as opposed to the now-outdated concepts of Newtonian certainty. And it is presented in a very clear and historically grounded way that helps to put it in context. Truly excellent.

    “.. Alan Turing – whose genius has profoundly affected us, but which tragically drove them insane and eventually led to them all committing suicide.:

    Wrong.

    He committed suicide due to being hounded (Official Secrets Act, Security Services and culture of the era) for being homosexual.

    Despicable that the producers will distort history & exploit one man’s tragedy to promote their work
