Rik Mayall: Lord of Misrule

Of all the people who have ever lived, there is only one that can say “I am Rik Mayall”, creator of the TV series The Young Ones, a pan global phenomenon and loved by millions. On the day Rik was born god cried “let there by light entertainment” and there was, he dreamt the impossible dream and there will never be another.

For those that are unfamiliar with his work Richard Mayall, was an English comedian, writer, actor and voice-over artist. He was famous mostly for his alternative style of comedy, primarily in the 1980s with TV shows including not only The Young Ones but the cult classics Bottom, Blackadder, Filthy Rich & Catflap, etc.

When Mayall died in June 2014, he was described as a “truly brilliant” comedian with a unique stage presence by many of his peers. He not only entertained but inspired a new generation of comedy stars.

  1. Pretty awesome piece. A bit too “Rik was a saint”, but very well done. I was a bit shocked by Christopher Ryan, he’s almost unrecognizable. Age wreaks havoc on all of us. For one moment I thought they had done a make-up job on him. Then I realized that “Young Ones” was over 30 years ago. 🙁
