This all started before the war ended with US and Soviet Union gathering\capturing scientists and spies for their own uses.. The German scientists pratically built the US space program.. Many German scientists\spies and former war criminals had a simple choice.. Go to the US and have a chance at a decent life.. Or got to the Soviet Union where they wouldn't be so lucky..
