The Marketing of Madness

The Marketing of Madness is the definitive documentary on the psychiatric drugging industry. Here is the real story of the high income partnership between psychiatry and drug companies that has created an $80 billion psychotropic drug profit center.

But appearances are deceiving. How valid are psychiatrists’ diagnoses-and how safe are their drugs? Digging deep beneath the corporate veneer, this documentary exposes the truth behind the slick marketing schemes and scientific deceit that conceal dangerous and often deadly sales campaigns.

In this film you’ll discover that… Many of the drugs side effects may actually make your ‘mental illness’ worse. Psychiatric drugs can induce aggression or depression. Some psychotropic drugs prescribed to children are more addictive than cocaine. Psychiatric diagnoses appears to be based on dubious science. Of the 297 mental disorders contained with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, none can be objectively measured by pathological tests.

Mental illness symptoms within this manual are arbitrarily assigned by a subjective voting system in a psychiatric panel. It is estimated that 100 million people globally use psychotropic drugs.

The Marketing of Madness exposes the real insanity in our psychiatric ‘health care’ system: profit-driven drug marketing at the expense of human rights.

This film plunges into an industry corrupted by corporate greed and delivers a shocking warning from courageous experts who value public health over dollar.

  4. The Marketing of Madness is a documentary which alleges that the mental health industry is an unscientific field driven solely by theprofit motive, to the detriment of patients.

One of the interviewees is Claudia Keyworth, an advocate of ‘Bio-Energetic medicine’ who believes that healing is best accomplished using the “energy field of the human body”.[52] On the topic of mental illness, she asserts: “they say you have a chemical imbalance of serotonin and dopamine, but there’s never been a study to prove that, ever.”

However, a substantial volume of research does support the prevailing view among experts, which is that chemical imbalances do in fact play a role in various mental disorders (see also Biology of depression, and Causes of mental disorders).[53][54][55][56]

The documentary claims that psychiatrists have convinced the public that normal negative human experiences are mental illnesses.

An example used in the movie is the assertion that psychiatrists seek to label typical shyness as a “social anxiety disorder”.

However, patients are diagnosed with a social anxiety disorder only at debilitating levels, where there is an “intense fear in social situations”.[57] Unlike a shy individual, a person diagnosed with social anxiety disorder is likely to suffer from symptoms such asnausea, stammering, and panic attacks.

  5. Don’t be fooled by this documentary. It may sound and look totally authentic but it was made by the Citizen Commission on Human Rights who are a front group for the Church of Scientology (COS). They hate psychiatry and psychiatrists, not for the lack of applied science or indeed drug company affiliations but because they are in competition with the (imho) lunatics running COS for mind control techniques. Of course, the COS doesn’t explicitly state this but anyone familiar with this pseudo church will be aware of Hubbard’s nonsense.
Whilst every source dealing with COS and psychiatry has to be treated with some caution, Wikipedia has an article detailing COS’s poisoned and jaundiced viewpoints – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Commission_on_Human_Rights
Factor in these comments and the fact that this documentary’s stated facts are unproven (something the COS continually and hypocritically allege about the medical industry) and suddenly many of the allegations fall away. BTW I have no connection whatsoever with the medical industry or profession. I just despise the way the COS goes about slagging off a whole industry for its own nefarious purposes. Sometimes, you have to shoot the messenger.

    • I wasn’t fooled. It didn’t have the feel of an authentic documentary. Not at all!. The narration, the background music, the testimonials, all had the feel of a cult video. I saw through it within the first few minutes I turned it off after about 30 minutes. Total crap and propaganda!

  6. Psycologists, nurses….come on people..these are not doctors…of course there are side effects to the medication….but every drug has possitive and negattive effects.I do agree some illnesses are prefabricated(like ADHD) but some are very serious,,bipolar, psychotic episodes, schizophrenia to name some…and for these kind of disorders you need some kind psychotropic medication.I’m not taking sides here,I agree that pharmaceutical companies are making big money out of diseases, but medication is necesary for mental illnesess or the individual won’t function properly in the social enviroment. And another thing, you don’t give medication for personality disorder…those are treated with psychoterapy.(pls excuse my bad grammar,I’m reaaalllly tired)

  7. By the standard of this documentary the Big Mac is a drug pushed by McDonald’s into the population to cure hunger syndrome. Of course, the Big Mac has horrible side effects, can be linked to heart problems and obesity and is not controlled by the FDA.

  8. Psychiatrists are medical doctors; just like cardiologists and dermatologists.  They are among the most intelligent of doctors and the lowest paid.  They don’t get any kick-backs from pharm companies!  That’s unethical and illegal!  The problem is that there is so much stigma around mental illness, people are shooting the messenger.  Instead of believing that someone has a treatable illness, you blame the psychiatrist and the drugs that effectively treat some of these illnesses.  You don’t think they “rush” cancer drugs to market??? And charge mega-dollars for them??  How will we ever get through to people that this are REAL illnesses.  Enough crap about how people should “deal with their issues…”  Would you say that to a cancer patient?

  10. Wow. As a mentally ill person, this was so banal and biased and simplistic. One thing can’t be compared to the other like they do so easily. Sure there’s a monetary benefit for psychotropic drug creation and sales, and there MIGHT be many unethical psychiatrists tossing medicines around, but for the truly mentally ill, medications are often the difference between life and death, between control and loss of control, and between harming oneself or others and not.Which makes this a potentially dangerous documentary, mixing just enough historical truth (the use of heroin and cocaine for curative reasons, without mentioning the addictive effects) with inaccurate information. Could really hurt people if they actually listen to this pseudo-science/history doc.

Or as Tom Cruise might say, this doc is glib…it’s so glib.

  11. Smells like Scientology, my engrams are restless, Zenu is pleased, pill anyone.

  12. this documentary is bull shit!

  13. It took me less than a minute to figure out that this was about Scientology.

  14. Okay, So it is a Scientology backed documentary. But I tend to agree with their view on this. Psychiatry like any other business has a bottom line, and that bottom line is money.

Society would be far better off in my opinion if people were guided by others to help them to resolve their problems logically and spiritually, rather than to just pop a pill and hope for the best.

Unless you are able to somehow bring yourself to working on the core problem, no amount of pills will help you.

That said, if someone is determined to commit suicide, then some argument can be made to give them something to bring down the anxiety, and deal with the issues they have. Maybe allow them to see that suicide, is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

    • “Unless you are able to somehow bring yourself to working on the core problem, no amount of pills will help you.”

hmmmm… So if you are schizophrenic and hear voices you are supposed to just “work on the core problem” and make the voices go away without any medication?

If you have bipolar disorder an cannot control your mood swings and full blown mania has hospitalized you, ruined your financial situation, and left you unemployed you are supposed to just “work on the core problem”…oh wait, you can’t. Mood swings are inevitable but medication can increase the time intervals between them.

      You are a complete dumbass.

  15. This video really hits the mark. I’ve worked as an executive in three of the biggest Pharma companies, and they all falsify lab results to rush ‘mental illness’ drugs to market. It is a big shame and a HUGE drain on our health care system. Seriously, illegal drugs, aside from meth and Heroine, are better and safer than ‘mental illness’ drugs to treat diseases that do NOT exist. Not to say that people don’t have depression issues, but these issues WILL NOT go away by taking a Big Pharma poison pill!

  16. Until you socialize healthcare and healthcare insurance in US, your doctors will always over subscribe drugs to you. Just take a look at the people that helped out in 9-11 attacks, for whom local government refused to pay for health for (they got serious lung conditions because they risked their lives to help people). In Cuba, free doctors told them they don’t need to take some of the drugs at all.

  17. This documentary has made me come down with a severe case of Instant Chronic IntraCerebral HyperCynicism Disorder

  18. No studies proving chemical imbalance…. really?

The pharmaceutical industry may be ugly but chemical imbalance is a fact and many people have gotten better using antidepressant drugs. Some side effects are horrible but not everyone gets them and they vary from none to severe. No studies on chemical imbalance…. again really?

    • your brainwashed bro

      • Multiple findings (e.g., Masand & Gupta, 1999; Kessler et al., 2003) that antidepressants (which typically increase monoamine levels) reduce depressive symptoms have been seen as abundant support for the chemical imbalance explanation of depression. However, response to antidepressants is not by itself proof that an imbalance of brain chemicals causes depression. Psychotherapy can alleviate depression (e.g., Antonuccio, Danton, DeNelsky, Greenberg, & Gordon, 1999); therefore (using the above logic), a deficiency of psychotherapy causes depression (of course, we are unaware of any serious assertions to this effect).

Sourced from an article on scientific databases

        • Sourced from an article on scientific databases’
You mean articles financed and brought to you by big Pharma? This mental illness drugs are not any better than a placebo, AND, and, and have serious life altering or ending side effects.

          • Are you illiterate? It says that anti-depressants do not cure depression there is simply a connection.  Moreover, this article was 2008 and cited the same article as the documentary various times. The point I was trying to convey is that it is simply too easy to accept everything they say in the documentaries and I did a little bit of research in order to assess the validity of their accusations. I found that a lot of their claims had at least some face validity (not that I advocate this method of validity). As for pharma companies financing the databases, one would have to see their accounts, which, incidentally, would be Online- nonetheless, it is highly probable, however, shouldnt there be laws preventing this conflict of interests? I am from Europe and we dont have the same culture, yet!

    • There is no definitive proof of chemical imbalance being the cause of mental illness, sorry there just isn’t. All the data collected from studies is highly and I mean highly subjective. They do not, in fact, know why substance A relieves condition B.

For instance, are you aware that SSRIs are about as effective as SSREs. So they (researchers) think it has something to do with serotonin, but they don’t know if it is because there is too much or too little. They also don’t know if manipulating serotonin directly has an effect on other neurotransmitters.

It might just as well be a crap shoot as for which drugs work to treat which symptoms. The amount of knowledge we claim about how the mind works is far in advance of what we can actually show that we know.

You can’t blindly read studies, sometimes you have to think critically about the results and search for other possible answers. I think, only then can you call yourself a student.

  19. This is Scientology propaganda disguised as an educational documentary.  This is the video they show you at “The Museum of Death”; a museum funded by Scientology.

    • Well, if you want a non bias doc, watch bbc “the trap” 3 part documentary, it discusses this issues well

    • Thanks for the info, turns out you’re completely right!

Check out the very first sentence on the documentarys’ producer’s wiki page:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens_Commission_on_Human_Rights

I guess this means we should all think for ourselves and take this documentary with a grain of salt, as it is clearly biased to shit!

“The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) is an advocacy group established in 1969 by the Church of Scientologyand psychiatrist Thomas Szasz.”
      “Productions
CCHR have produced a number of documentaries promoting their view of modern psychiatry. These includeMaking A Killing, Prescription for Violence, The Marketing of Madness, Dead Wrong and Psychiatry: An Industry of Death which was made to accompany the CCHR’s museum of the same name.”

  20. I worked with the mentally ill and it does exist, the fact that it has become a means of getting a profit and targeting children…it disgusting. The world is better than this, shit happens, you get sad, you get mad and then you heal. Some people need meds yes, but they are usually those who can’t can’t them themselves. I loved this documentary, but i did not like how it diminished psychiatry because there are some counseling programs, and assistance programs, groups, that are out there for people who don’t automatically diagnois you or make you take meds, they listen and help you heal. Remember everyday is a struggle, but the fact that you wake up is a blessing.

    • I like your comment I also work with mentally ill, its a double edged sword, it can be so rewarding at times and at other times it can be so painful. But we have probably both seen the effects medication can have on people. Coercion is not care as you allude to above.

  21. Oh nice i saw this one a long time ago on my old Documentary site, such a sweet file even tho its totally one sided lol but i do agree with alot thats said in it 😀
