The Mean World Syndrome

Mean World Syndrome is a phenomenon where the violence-related content of mass media convinces viewers that the world is more dangerous than it actually is, and prompts a desire for more protection than is warranted by any actual threat. Mean World Syndrome is one of the main conclusions of cultivation theory. The term “Mean World Syndrome” was coined by George Gerbner, a pioneer researcher on the effects of television on society, when he noted that people who watched a lot of TV tended to think of the world as an unforgiving and scary place.

  2. This doc would be a lot better without the tenured hippie blah blah blah-ing.

  3. So… I guess the question is, what effect does this documentary have on our collective outlook of the media?

  5. a very interesting watch indeed. Well worth a look

  6. Makes a whole lot of sense, again media controlled by the elite making people paranoid while diverting attention to real issues surrounding world domination. Again controlling the population to believe america is under threat from the world around them, therefore mentally justifying the need to protect the homeland and go on senseless wars which only profits the elite once more.

  7. This is by far one of the best docos I’ve seen in years. George Gerbner is one of the most intelligent and enlightening educators who deserves more attention. I would highly recommend this documentary to everyone.
