Horizon reveals the latest research into one of the most mysterious and common human experiences – pain.

Breakthroughs have come from studying a remarkable woman in London who has felt no pain at all in her life, a man in the US who cut off his own arm to survive, and three generations of an Italian family who don’t feel extremes of temperature.

We witness a new treatment that involves a pioneering computer game ‘snow world’ that contains the power to banish pain.

And we find how powerfully our moods and emotions shape what pain we feel.

Fascinating! So many people struggle with pain in their daily lives and would give almost anything to be rid of it. Yet, this film exposes the other side of the coin and how essential pain, or the ability to experience it is.

I wonder if not being able to feel pain extends to pain you feel in exercise like lactic acid buildup? Could this be a doorway into being able to push training and athletics farther?

I live with chronic pain and would love even a couple of hours without pain – I can’t remember what it is like to be pain free. But I also realize how dangerous it must be to not feel pain to let you know something is wrong.

What about different types of pain? Emotional pain, Psychological pain, spiritual pain.

It’s weird, because pain and discomfort are so closely linked, and pain is felt so differently in different situations. I wonder if the woman who can’t feel pain feels little physical discomfort.
