Life, the Universe and Everything. Professor Robert Winston examines the roots of religious beliefs in prehistoric societies and how humanity’s sense of the divine developed in different ways in different societies. This BBC documentary will describe particularly the divergence between religions that appear to tolerate a range of deities and those that present strict monotheism. In this light the film looks at the emergence ofthe Hindu concept of Brahman as the supreme being with the many different forms that this can take, and also the ideas of karma and reincarnation central to both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The docu further explores Zoroastrianism, perhaps the first explicitlymonotheistic religion.

The Story of God – Part 3: The God of the Gaps

This film examines how belief in God had been challenging the modern world by secular ideas, in particular science – how people of all religious beliefs have over the centuries accommodated their faith with the pursuit of knowledge. It explores how advances in astronomy, physics and biology challenged religious beliefs, particularly in the Christian West, and the historic and current debates over Darwin’s theory of evolution. Finally, the documentary looks at those scientific disciplines where a convergence between faith and science seems possible.

This documentary cuts off just before the end, in mid sentence infact. Still, I could not agree more with this translation of faith, that it is based on believing “inspite of” not “because of” and should not rest on certainty. To deny the vast evidence in favor of evolution makes the fundamentalist look ridiculus and simple, not to mention intentionally obstructive toward the progress of mankinds understanding of the natural world. Its as if they do not dare let people truly take in all the facts and put things under scrutiny for fear they may lose their belief in God. Any second year college student knows that the bible is wrong on many historical assertions, and any one with common sense knows it claims things that simply cannot be in the logical and real world we live in. This in no way reduces its importance or means that God does not exist, it simply means the Bible must be looked at as a book of allegory and parables with the occasional historical fact included. It is still a very good guide to morality and spirituality.

I found Parts 1 and 2 are very well worth watching.  Part 3 on the other hand reveals the Professor’s bigotry and takes a side turn into Christianity’s human errors and follies.
The next time you take something of this scope on Mr. Winston, I suggest you find an
honest reviewer to point you in the right direction.
Instead of complaining and being confrontational about the waste of time and money for the theme park built to show intelligent design, do something bigger.  Why not
confront the Israelis and their crusade (via the bible) for all of the Palestian lands.
My God, how much money do you think they spend on the wall and the weapons and the planes and the prisons and the check points.  All in the name of their g-d.
Too much to deal with ah mate.
It is also funny how you confront the Grand Canyon tour guide about his belief in
intelligent design and go after him because he believes in the bible and that creation
    took place 6,000 years ago.
You missed the opportunity to ask your Rabbi about what the year is for Jews.
Bet he would tell you 5,777, based on creation.  Not too damn off from 6,000.
So please try to be less hateful of Christians ( it shows) and be more balanced.
