The Trials of Ted Haggard

This documentary by Alexandra Pelosi takes a behind-the-scenes look at the recent life and hard times of ex-minister Pastor Ted. Ted Haggard had it all: prosperity, a doting wife, five kids, and a ministry that reached out to approximately 30 million followers who hung on his every word, whether on TV or in person at one of his arena sermons.

Ted Haggard had it all: prosperity, a doting wife, five kids and a ministry that reached more than 30 million followers who hung on his every word. But in 2006, it all fell apart in a sea of scandal. Journalist/filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi returns to talk with “Pastor Ted”–whom she met while filming Friends of God for HBO–who was exiled from the church he built and the state where he lived after admitting to “sexual immorality” and to buying methamphetamines.

Following Haggard and his family as they move from house to house and motel to motel, Pelosi interviews the sullied ex-minister as he works as a traveling insurance salesman…and maps out a strategy for redeeming himself and supporting his family.

  1. likable fellow.  let he who has not sinned, and not believed a bunch of demonstrable falsehoods for purely emotional reasons, cast the first stone.

  2. sorry ted…..your a bit dumb, very annoying and totally inexperienced in life.

  3. OMG! This guy actually thinks his family is “poor” living in that very nice apartment! I hate this whining, complaining spirit, when he obviously doesn’t have a clue how “most of us” live! The female voice, when he is moving, said he was moving more times than most people do in their lives. How do they figure that? I, a single mother, had to move 18 times in my children’s upbringing, because we were SO poor! And I was a hard-working Respiratory Therapist! Yet, NEVER having enough money to have a savings account. And he calls himself a “LOSER”! Does he think this is going to win him points to ordinary people who can’t even afford that nice of an apartment??? I think he is, indeed, a loser! But NOT because he lives “SO LOWLY”, like all the rest of us, but because of his arrogance! My son is almost 40 now, and is an atheist, which is very disappointing to me. But when I see things like this…who can blame him!?? It SHOULD BE a shame to ALL Christians! Forgiving is one thing. Being kind is one thing. Tolerance is one thing. But supporting or REWARDING bad behavior is quite another thing!!!

  6. Hmmm…he never applied nor interviewed for a job. But still he gets to live in an absolutely beautiful, comfortable home, not needing anything…YET, people are still feeling sorry for him! What happens in the real world, when a person has a worthless degree on a piece of paper, screws up THIS BAD, and loses their job? They live in deplorable circumstances, hungry, needing to apply for social programs that will more than likely reject them. They might be standing in line at the local food banks, and possibly even homeless…enduring the worst humiliation imaginable, and SERIOUSLY reaping the consequences of their SIN. EVERYONE, at that point, believes in accountability! But when someone is in a position like this, a person who had thousands of people in the palm of their hand, lying, cheating, swindling, and SO MUCH MORE…people FEEL SORRY for them, and sadly, believe that people who want him to be ACCOUNTABLE for his behavior are cruel and mean. I simply don’t think he should enjoy ANY of his high life, because it was achieved by taking advantage of many, many people. He should have to live like normal people do, who have taken advantage of the system, society, and others. His 3 car garage, “…from blessings of old.” INCREDIBLE!

  7. I see a lot of good in Gayle and Ted Haggard, who make mistakes but struggle to be better. I find them inspirational and I hope I can learn to be more like them, and at the very least more compassionate to those around me who stumble. They have my respect and my gratitude for sharing their story and their struggles.

  10. IF there was true acceptance ”Ted Haggard” wouldn’t exist.

  11. I feel bad for this guy and his family.  It only comes to show how judgmental and how unforgiving people can be, however “holy” and “godly” they seem to be. This is what I don’t like about religion and religious people. I believe he already paid the price of what he did but people are still not giving him a chance. It’s sad.

  12. I am glad he fell so publicly. You rap what you sow. Karma is a b!thch!

  13. This man gives me the creeps with his demonic eyes & insane grin.

    • Wow what a loving mother fucker Christian you are! If hell does exist which it does not, is made for garbage like you, who unmercifully condemn people with out ever being in their shoes. If this happened to your own flesh and blood or yourself you would not such an asshole!

  14. His wife is a fag hag.

  15. I just have to say, i am an atheist but this film really had an affect on me, i really felt for him which suprised me because i had seen him prech and really wanted for someone to show him the real truth. But the Eveangelical people preach so much about the bible and gods laws but i am not sure they have read the bible because it clearly says that we are not suppose to pass judgment on others that is only for God, practice what you preach people……

  19. I cerebrate insurance is imprescindible to anyone volitional to living a mind issue beingness. But today´s rates are retributive too spiky!

  20. Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The strength and capabilities of this man are beyond measure.
