The Union: The Business Behind Getting High

Ever wonder what British Columbia’s most profitable industries are? Logging? Fishing? Tourism? Ever think to include marijuana? If you haven’t, think again. No longer a hobby for the stereotypical hippie culture of the ’60s, BC’s illegal marijuana trade industry has evolved into a seemingly unstoppable business giant, dubbed by those involved as ‘The Union’.

Commanding upwards of $7 billion Canadian annually, The Union’s roots stretch far and wide, directly and indirectly affecting all areas of our society. With 65% to 85% of all ‘BC Bud’ being exported to the United States, it’s clear that the BC marijuana trade has become an international issue with consequences that extend far beyond our borders. When there are record profits to be made, who are the players, and when do their motives become questionable?

Why is marijuana illegal? What health risks do we really face? Does prohabition work? What would happen if we taxed it? Medicine, paper, fuel, textiles, food, etc. Are we missing something here?

Follow filmmaker Adam Scorgie as he dives head first into Canada’s most socially acceptable illegal activity. Along the way, Adam demsytifies the underground market and brings to light how such a large industry can function while remaining illegal. By interviewing experts from around the globe, including growers, clippers, police officers, criminalogists, economists, psychologists, medical doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, Scorgie explores the cause and effect nature of the business behind getting high.

Nobody’s innocent in this exploration of an industry that may be profiting more by being illegal. Join Adam Scorgie as he unravels the mystery of The Union.

  1. The most enlightening and informative film I have seen in a long assed time!

  2. The Best I have ever seen on this subject matter

  3. this doc should have been called ‘breaking the myths of pot’. at the very least, good ammunition for long drawn out, late night debates. you know, the ones between the drunks and the pot heads.

  4. You got some beneficial ideas there. I did a search over a trouble and learnt most peoples will agree in your blog. If you are an experienced traveler, you’ll be able to know the ins and outs of travel to all parts with the world, and it is possible to have really specific ideas about what you need to see and in which you desire to go.

  5. niceblogcanyoupostmore? thanx

  6. I think that documentary was an eye opener really. I have always been told that marijuana was bad and that I should never try it. I am a living case that has been smoking marijuana for almost 20 years now and was diagnosed with a form of cancer that I was told I would die from before I was the age of 25.

I started smoking pot at 14 and have been in remission for 20 years. I only smoke only a few times a week to unwind and relax after a stressful day of work. I do not drink or smoke cigarettes and have a very good job and a thriving family.

Basically no one knows I have suffered with cancer as they see that for all intensive purposes that I am visually normal and function quite well every day as well as go to the gym several times a week.

Without marijuana I don’t believe I would have the life that I have for the past 20 years.

My doctors all know and I am sure would love to write a case study on me but because of patient confidentiality cannot. They tell me I am doing the right thing and they have seen the cancer just dissipate. I cannot have surgery to get rid of the cells so I have a wonder drug that does. I have not had to have any other pain or other drug since I was 14 and would stand by the legalization.

The drug companies make absolutely no money from me and I spend $20.00 per week making myself cancer free. WOW!!! Even all the poor people in the world could find that to take care of all of their ailments.

I wish they would legalize or at least decriminalize but truthfully I am only 35 years old and I don’t think It will happen in my life time because there are too many ignorant people that cant see whats right in front of their nose.

  7. Damn the host of this documentary is so fine. He just makes it that much better.

  8. We can only hope Marijuana will be legalized or even decriminalized in Canada… Will most likely happen in my lifetime but hopefully not another 20-30 years from now..

  9. This is by far THE BEST documentary on the TRUTHS behind all of this SHIT I have EVER seen. Actually, possibly the best movie I have ever seen! I am sitting here after watching this and tears are streaming down my face. Seriously.

  10. A Film that everyone should see
very well done film that does a good job of trying to keep a balance and not getting to lost in propaganda on either side of an issue

    • This movie is almost nothing but propaganda. don’t kid yourself. i happen to like this movie however because i agree with it. i also agree everyone should see this
