They Choose China

In this feature documentary, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Shuibo Wang (Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square) aims his camera at the astonishing story of 21 American soldiers who opted to stay in China after the Korean War ended in 1954. Back home in the United States, McCarthyism was at its height and many Americans believed these men were brainwashed by Chinese communists. But what really happened? Using never-before-seen footage from the Chinese camps and interviews with former PoWs and their families, They Chose China tells the fascinating stories of these forgotten American dissidents.

  1. It sounds like these guys were in a reeducation/propaganda camp and not general pow camp. Note that they’re all from the same camp, they’re the lucky ones. For a large majority of the POWs they would not live to see home nor get the chance for proper care and food. It’s nice to get another perspective, but this is simply not true. 80k South Koreans were MIA, only 10k were ever returned.

  2. One of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time…very very very good, thank you for making it, peace.

  3. A fine documentary… honorable, informative & enlightening. It pulls at the heartstrings of Truth combined with Love, few things are stronger.

  4. Will be great when there is a refusal to learn by these textbooks you speak. Ironic how you must become indoctrinated into a societies teachings in order to receive a piece of paper stating you as “qualified” to work, or teach a desired field.

  5. interesting..its great to view different perspectives regarding historical matters .. history books and educational materials tend to usually be one-sided (the side of the pocket book of political fundors) and definitely limits exposure to different possibilities
