Vanishing of the Bees

Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.

Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees.

Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery.

  7. Luckily, I got in
and saw the full Vanishing of the Bees documentary before it was removed. The
documentary was truly enlightening. It is a little disconcerting that, as far
as I know, the bees are still ‘vanishing’ and that the US Government hasn’t
volunteered the help they indicated they would give.

    The other shocking
display of indifference is the bare minimum effort that major corporations are
required to expend to get their products to the market. It is utterly appalling
that Bayer, a company whose products are tailored to kill pests off, would not
conduct more research into the effect on bees for more than 3 days. These
honeybees are the reason there are any crops at all to be protected, yet the
pesticides affect the bees just as much as other bugs, if not nearly as
quickly. It really shows the level of care the company has for the situation
when they wouldn’t agree to appear on the documentary.

Overall though, the film has presented a well
documented, informative piece of media that has shown people just how dire the
situation is. Well shot, though I think a few of the transitions could have
    been made a little better.

  8. Nature is exceeding resilient, remove the chemicals and they will rebound. The chemical companies won’t have food to eat, because the bees are dead, which they killed. I expect hunger will overcome greed. go get them and shut them down. Corporations need to eat to.
