What’s the Problem with Nudity?

What is wrong with nudity? Why are people embarrassed about their bodies? How and why did they get the way they are?

This documentary takes a group of volunteers and subjects them to a series of psychological and physical tests to challenge attitudes to the naked human form. The questions raised strike at the heart of human physical and social evolution.

Human beings are the only creatures that can be ‘naked’ – but why, how and when did people lose their fur? That question takes Horizon around the world to meet scientists from Africa to Florida, and they are finding answers in unexpected places: the chest hair of Finnish students, the genetic history of lice, and the sweat of an unusual monkey. It turns out that something everyone takes for granted may hold the key to the success of the entire human species.

  1. Thanks for some other fantastic post. The place else may just anyone get that type of information in such a perfect means of writing? I’ve a presentation next week, and I’m at the search for such information.

  2. sensitive to nudity due to our large brains!? seriously? does anyone else see that it’s obviously due to cultural conditioning?

    • That’s not what they meant. The development of art started enlarging our brains and heads. They were stating something true: as our heads got bigger, women died during childbirth. The women that survived, survived because of a reduced gestation period. THIS is true. We used to be born after 2 years in the womb, and now we’re born after 9 months. Extremely premature. This made pair-bonding a must, because women now had to care for a helpless infant that needed to be carried around and males needed to “protect” their families. Complex chemical functions occurred as a result in our brains, including long-term attachment and loyalty. You can see how these lead to wanting to reduce nudity, right? As splitting up families in environments full of deadly predators was not only foolish, it was deadly. THAT’S the historical purpose for nudity. Trying to obstruct nudity now, based on that, should be considered social conditioning. However, if you noticed, they were just trying to understand the cause for nude-shame and were even encouraging the participants to challenge those instincts.

  3. About this DOC ” Whats wrong with Nudity”, well nothing is. If everyone would visit a nude resort or nude beach then the population would not have all the hangups they have now when it comes to nudity. I spend about 20 hours per day naked. I hate to have to get dressed to go shopping.I go as often as possible to a nude resort where everyone is as naked as I am. The atmosphere is really relaxed there. I have met some very wonderful folks there.

  4. I agree, the human body is a beautiful thing, well some are! good viewing also, soo inspirational I wrote a song about it!

  5. Great documentary.  Darwin’s “sexual selection”, in my mind, is right on course for human evolution.  Generally, it is the female that chooses “the one”.  As for humans losing our body hair,
that too, I believe, was the females at that time, millions of years ago that probably preferred to mate with a male that didn’t have so much hair which also brought with himself lots of “bugs” (ie, lice etc.) that would no doubt during any mating ritual wind-up on herself and she’d have to deal with that problem as well as a pregnancy and of course then having to give birth to a child in whatever clean/unclean state she found herself in.  After all, there were no showers or baths back then so the easiest way to not have to deal with another problem during procreating, birthing and raising the offspring is obviously to mate/have around the “cleanest” sort of mate you could find.
I’m kind of surprised the scientists didn’t notice that fact.

Having said all that, men shouldn’t worry about hair (it is still very attractive to many women) as long as they stay clean which in our world is not a problem.

  7. I don’t think the analysis for the test on preference for hairiness/hairlessness is completely valid…they did not consider the impact of society, especially media :

  12. Great doc…. very interesting.

  13. The Garden Of Eden Was The World’s First Nudist Park (Adam and Eve
(Genesis 2:8-4:2)). Humans are not meant to wear clothes, animals and
fish don’t wear clothes! The media had made nudity as a perversion into
the human race. People, and including the media had created the idea
that nudity / nudism is sin because of jealousy. They were ashamed of
their nakedness and sought to cover themselves because of the constant
false lies about nudism. People should learn to accept what GOD or what
Nature had created on this earth when we have entered it.

    • Adam and Eve were not the first humans on Earth, sweetie. Pre-historic hominids were. And they’ve existed for far more than 2000 years… Time to drop the fairy tales and pick up a textbook, dearie.

  14. cool doco. very interesting and informative i find it interesting that it only took two days for them to become comfortable with each others nudity.
