In 1969 violence erupted in Northern Ireland between Protestants loyal to the British Crown and Catholics. As such an information warfare department is established inside the British Army’s Northern Ireland headquarters at Lisburn, comprising army psychological warfare and the Information Research Department (IRD), a clandestine department in the British Foreign Office.

The IRD as a Foreign Office had to justify their position in Northern Ireland and they did so by emphasizing the international links of the IRA. By saying this is to do with Ireland, The Communists, and oddly the Vatican City as well, playing up the Catholic angle. Colin Wallace was an intelligence officer who blew the whistle on the fake news the IRD were publishing and was eventually framed for a murder.

The Man Who Knew Too Much is a film by Michael Oswald about Colin Wallace. Detailing how Wallace helped to spread fake news, created a witchcraft scare, smeared politicians and attempted to divide and create conflict amongst communities, organisations, and individuals. He later fell out with members of the intelligence community and found himself accused of murder.

In conjunction with the release of this film, Colin Wallace has announced legal action against the British Ministry of Defence.
