On the night of the 13th of January 2012, the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground off the island of Giglio, Tuscany, west of Italy. Its carcass lay off the coast of Tuscany for a year a grim reminder of one of the most bizarre catastrophes in nautical history and of the incredible series of blunders that took 32 lives making it the worst cruise accident since the Titanic.

This special investigates the litany of errors that turned this dream ship into an absolute nightmare. The film combines innovative filming techniques with unparalleled access to survivors, rescue units, and the highest Italian coast guard and fire brigade authorities.

First off we hear from the islanders involved in the rescue and get a moment-by-moment narrative from their unique perspective. Then the film gives us an in-depth description of the advanced search and rescue missions that were responsible for the biggest salvage operation in history.
