Blind Spot

Blind Spot is a documentary that establishes the inextricable link between the energy we use, the way we run our economy and the effect it has had on our environment.

It takes as a starting point the inevitable energy depletion scenario known as Peak Oil to inform us that by whatever measure of greed, wishful thinking, neglect or ignorance, we are at a crossroad which offers two paths, both with dire consequences. If we continue to burn fossil fuels our ecology will collapse and if we don’t, our economy will.

Either path we choose to take will have a profound effect on our way of life.

  1. I enjoy, result in I discovered exactly what I used to be taking a look for. You’ve ended my four day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye

  2. I think it is a pity more time wasn’t given over in the film to the idea of population reduction.  Short of appealing to any conspiracy theorists out there….  It does appear that population reduction is about the only direct thing mankind can absolutely contribute to the solution – and we can even do it on an individual basis.

Less people using the remaining resources gives the opportunity to adjust lifestyles and expectations and perhaps even find workable solutions (for the reduced population).  Not changing the numbers of born inevitably will lead to a mass crisis as there is no way to support their expectations in terms of food/energy//consumer goods.

Perhaps governments cannot face mentioning it as the voters may take it as the introduction of a totalitarian state – the same as China and being communist….OR perhaps it is again the utter short-termism from a greedy industrial complex that cannot bear to see a decline in customer/consumer numbers which would in turn reduce their profit margin.  What a tragedy just to avoid a reduced profit margin!

Now if the government started giving out credits to NOT have (more) children they’d be on to a winner.  If the credits were linked to energy efficiency, all the better (electric cars/perma-culture education/eco-village creation where communities support each other) there would be takers – especially if people got to actually hear about the peak oil issue rather than the existing mainstream media silence.  I think a lot of people would love the opportunity to live in a real community rather than our current 2 lifestyle choice restriction of (1) consumer culture or (2) non-consumer (ie perceived as a freak to the mainstream of society) hippy/gypsy/drop-out.

Next time you meet a couple that don’t have children marvel at their contribution to the coming peak oil crisis (food shortage, transportation costs etc).  China DIDN’T contribute 300million people after they introduced the one child policy – although it absolutely has to be said that was an involuntary contribution (from the families denied the children without any choice).

It is one major contribution people can make (in addition to reducing their consumer habits).  They are only likely to make it though if they are aware of it being a positive choice rather than a ‘pity’ (for their ‘infertility) or fearful if the choice has been enforced by a totalitarian state.

Given the information in the film – are you happy to see your child(ren) and grandchildren left to survive in this impending scenario?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!  It scares the hell out of me that I won’t be there to help them deal with this coming crises. And it will be a Crises we today can’t begin to Imagine!

I can only hope as you stated, that we can curb our populations growth and it won’t get any worse. but that’s alone is not the answer.  We need some new Technology to design batteries that will power our cars and even our trucks.

What going to happen to all of our old gas/diesel vehicles, our Airplanes and military vehicles that can’t run on batteries??
I can’t imagine what the future will bring for our kids and I’m not liking it at all!

Like I said, our Politicians are talking about building ‘Infrastructure Projects’ to put people to work,,, for what???
We need our Technological Brain Trust to start working on Alternatives to Oil and right now!

No matter what we do,,, it’s not going to be easy and it will leave hundreds of thousands of people to fend for themselves as we run out of these vital resources around the globe!!

See if this clip from ‘Network’ from the 70’s applies to how a lot of us feel today?

  4. Do we have a ‘Blind Spot’ when it comes to recognizing our ‘Finite Limit’ of this planets Natural Resources?

Can 6 Billion Humans live on this planet Forever, without ever actually coming to terms with this planets inability to continue to provide the Human Race with the Resources that we have come to expect and enjoy?

    Just
how desperate is our situation?  We have come to the point in this
planets long life, where we will have used more resources in the last
150 years then has been stored and then harvested by us, in this planets
    previous 2 Billion years!

My children will see this Planet run
out of Oil and the collapse of our ‘Industrial’ way of life if we don‘t
change our consumption of Oil,, NOW!
My children will see Water become a commodity that nations will go to war over.
    My
children will see Major Shortages in our worlds Food Supplies as our
inability to produce and deliver that food without the availability of
    Cheep Oil to do so!

I was watching the news the other day when I
heard a Politician say;    Our unemployment rate could be reduced by
spending massive amounts of money on INFRASTRUCTURE issues like Roads
and Bridges throughout our country.  I actually thought that idea was a
good one a few months ago!

    Now, I have to ask the question;
Our existing Infrastructure was mostly created during the Thirties and
Forties. 70 to 80 years ago when we had just found what we thought was
an unlimited supply of Oil here in America!
    In reality,,, why would
we spend ANY money on our infrastructure in America, when in 40 to 50
years from now, we will NOT Have the Oil to produce the  Gasoline to run
all of our vehicles on these new Roads and Bridges that they propose to
build?  That’s not making good sense, is it?!
Take the time and watch this Documentary!  Then tell me, if it doesn’t make you feel like I do, like the proverbial ‘Hamster on the Wheel’!!!

  6. Not that I’ve read every comment, but intrinsically I think it to be so.

  7. It’s true,
There is only ONE way to stop the total collapse of our way of life soon.

    A. IF we would now all stop buying any further unneccasary things, and try to understand the nearby future value of all that goods, like cloths and other stuff, actually anything material other than food and be just happy with all we(you) have personally. If than the production of all consumergoods is heavily reduced it will greatly slow down the current oil-use.
Don’t buy music, play it yourself or copy from people you meet, etc.

    B. Products must get a ‘label of neccessity’,which will decide new prices.
Your SUV will still be available but it will cost you a LOT.
(in the end less people can afford it than, so less will be produced)
    If the ‘problem era’ is called ‘industrial era’, than the turnaround must be something anti-industrial, like let’s say;

    C. when the majority of car-factories will be out of order, they can be turned into greenhouses, and more people will find work in that area, basicly just an international unitedly agreed shift of produktion-focus towards food, clothing, and shelter for all.
Also educational system will have to change to meet this futuredemands.

    D. Valuta will correspond with certain valuepoints related to the (inter)national food-produktion on any given time.
A coat will cost than for example 22 breads, and your paycheck might be counting 500 breads (or more or less).

    E. No more banks of course

    F. Setting a maximum to the amount of citizens a city can hold and stay healthy, not too big, with it’s own foodsupply or other major industrie like cloths and parts for our excisting machinerie.

    G. Put a bunch of wisemen at the head of all cities, and let those cities be democratic, with a political system completely without any ties to religion or business.

No more consuming in this order,…what works in small works also in big.
And if you see howmuch 1 person in this life nowadays can live just fine without buying anything else than the most needed things, and that already that can make the use of money (oil) reduce to 30%.
And that is WITH all the use of internet, laptop, cloths, etc.

THE ONLY THING IS TO NOT WANT EVERYTHING JUST FASHIONALY RENEWED !!!!!
WHEN U ONLY RENEW STUFF WHEN IT IS REALLY NEEDED THAN MOST THINGS LAST EASILY 10 TO 15 YEARS. STOP BEING GREEDY, BECAUSE WTF IF YOUR FLATSCREEN CAN BE NEXT YEAR ANOTHER 20 INCHES BIGGER, WHAT DOES THAT GIVE????
SERIOUS, IF U ALL JUST STICK TO WHAT YOU’VE GOT RIGHT NOW,
AND ONLY REPLACE THAT WHAT GETS BROKEN UNFIXABLE,
WE WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IT AND EVEN STAY LIVING REASONABLY LIKE NOW.

  8. incredible. so much loss.

  9. one more thing about energy needs and a way to harness enough without almost any environmental impact (except for producing that many of solar panels):
    youtube.com/watch?v=-wTt3IaSIwY#t=54m07s

  10. Globalization until death. We can make a difference by emailing this to as many people as possible!

    • Dave,

Good thought. The problem I run into is that I can not find very many people in my “circle of socialization” who are interested in taking the time to slow down their extremely busy lives to watch this documentary or others like it. Some people I know are a little interested, they listen to me relay information I have learned, and many people look at me like I have four heads. How does one get through to these people?

This is obviously a serious delema and a hurdle that I don’t know will ever be crossed before it is too late! Where are our politians? Where is our media? Why aren’t the getting this information out? Are they too busy…too interested in things…money…material things…what can we do? I am serious…I am afraid.

Is the only way the current state of the world will come to an end is through a clataclysmic tragedy?

  11. Zero point energy, read about it.
    Cold fusion, read about it.

Second, theory that collecting solar energy would lower global temperature is just ridiculous. That would only be possible if we used that much of inefficient current solar panels to cover most of the earth ground.

Amount of the energy entire mankind needs versus the entire “reserve” of solar/wind/sea energy is just too great to be that significant. It’s like one man is using entire sun just to heat water in his house, he could do it practically forever without any consequences. Now multiply that man by 7 billion and multiply the water heater by a factor of 10 and you still arent no where near the amount of energy required to “malfunction” sun’s effect on the earth’s life. It’s just too massive.

I repeat, only way you could affect is by covering entire surface with solar panels so ground and seas couldn’t get any sun, but were counting on other methods for collecting solar power than just stupid solar panels

  12. “you must be the change you want to see in the world” is Siddhartha Gautama

People need to recognize there is no green energy. If we gained all of our power from the skies – then weather would fail. If we gathered it from the sun – our temperatures will be off – if we gather it from the sea – our currents will change. Basically humans need to forget using so much technology and inefficient pleasures. We could sustain it only if we have a drastic drop in population. Basically we need to go back to the way of cave man. It works – with our current knowledge we could do it comfortably. Finding your food will be more rewarding then the office. This world we use to live in is what allowed the Ape to evolve into Man. Man has now extracted himself from this world – we are now de-evolving in the long run. Big picture – sure we might be currently comforted – but we are stopping the evolution of our grandchildren. We need to focus on other things besides buildings and cars and product. We need to focus on love – plants – animals – the body – the soul – philosophies – communication – art – nature – things that bring us responsible enjoyment.

    • “If we gained all of our power from the skies – then weather would fail. If we gathered it from the sun – our temperatures will be off – if we gather it from the sea – our currents will change.”

I used to do environmental impact studies for oil & gas developments. Now I manage carbon reduction and renewables projects.

This is one of the most ridiculous comments I have seen for some time.

Solar – will not change surface temperatures, except to prevent CO2 emissions causing climate change.
Wind – will not change wind patterns and strength. This is driven by the earth’s rotation and the sun’s heat
Wave & tidal power – will not still the oceans. They harness a miniscule amount of energy as generated by interaction of Earth’s seas with the moon and weather system. No, it won’t stop the moon either!

All these technologies and others (e.g. biomass, biogas) will however:

      – Significantly reduce or effectively eliminate greenhouse gas emissions
      – Minimise environmental/health effects from air and water discharges
      – Avoid costly management of toxic residues and contaminated land
      – Provide decentralized, diversified energy supply
      – Improve energy security and reduce conflict over energy supplies
      – Promote the development on new, sustainable industries
      – Help developing countries achieve a reasonable standard of living

HOWEVER, what will change our average temperature, wreck weather patterns and ocean circulation currents irrevocably and cause extremes of rainfall and drought is the continued trending of carbon dioxide and other GHGs beyond the 390-ish parts per million it is now – as driven by continued use of fossil fuels.

“Basically humans need to forget using so much technology and inefficient pleasures. We could sustain it only if we have a drastic drop in population. Basically we need to go back to the way of cave man.”

Again, a total mis-truth (although if your individual population were to drastically drop I would not complain).

It is not a choice between living well off fossil fuels, or living in a cave. Technology exists to provide for our current energy needs with renewable technology. We are starting to see the direct substitution of fossil infrastructure – the UK, EU and Australia are moving towards 20% renewable energy by 2020. The battle continues to move along that path, and we are winning that battle.

Yes, population growth needs to stop. Most likely this will stabilize at around 9 billion by maybe 2050. The challenge is to provide alternatives for developing countries to the fossil-fuel intensive growth path of developed countries. Such dependency would be unsustainable. This is part of the reason for China’s massive deployment of wind energy in recent years.

So that is the proposition – direct substitution of our energy infrastructure on terms that are economically attractive. And they are attractive by the time you factor in huge subsidies to fossil fuels, lost production due to failing agriculture, more extreme storms, salt water intrusion from sea level rise, and housing millions of environmental refugees.

Don’t be fooled by this oil company troll posing as a hippy. A cave would indeed be a suitable place for this troglodyte to dwell.

  13. no i think better way to change what ez is talking about is creating new lifestyle, not trying to prevent present.
i believe we should not fight wrong in the world, i believe we should live right.

so instead all that greenpeace activism, whistle blowing, vegetarianism, earth saving lifestyles, we should choose creationist lifestyle, where we took our destiny in our own hands.

meaning, we don’t react to what’s happening, we create, creation vs reaction.

that literally means that instead convincing people how they should live, we merely live the way we think it’s right.

so if you don’t like gas guslers way of life, you should think of a way how to avoid it. then teach others if they asked you to.

for example, you buy an electric car, you make your own private, homemade power plant, combined of natural gas collector, solar power, wind power, biofuel station, maybe even a geothermal plant.

so instead of consuming power, you produce it (and sell it earning money to even make your lifestyle more attractive for others too).

now people get interested in your success, they ask you if you can show them how they can do the same, you kindly teach them, the word spreds, after a few years, you’ve got yourself a real energy movement.

erradicating world’s power hunger, no need for more polluting coal plants, or dangerous and unpredictable nuclear plants, or horizon changing hydroelectric plants….

same goes for tv dumbening device.

just stop watching it, sell it.
when people ask you “have you seen this or that”, you answer them that you don’t watch tv anymore, coz you sold it. when they ask you why, you better have a good explantion prepared, so you might get them interested in your way of life so they become your potential “follower”.

vegetarians are ok, but there is one key principle they are wrong about. meat shouldn’t be off the table just because filthy greedy people from meat farms or companies are behaving to poor animals like that.

they could’ve shown them how to treat animals instead.

instead concentrating farm animals in one small place, more people should have land outside city and have their own animals. but the cost for taking care for them shouldn’t be high, merely cost of fences and taking care they’ve got plenty of grassed areas around.

just let them wander freely, they’ll find what’s good for them to eat, don’t you worry about mother nature, it has predicted mechanism taking care of that way before of us.

and with all todays technology, it shouldn’t be that hard or expensive to put some beacons inside of every significant animal you want to keep an eye on, in your herd, so you can track it down on gps in case it’s gotten lost.

i don’t want to generalise and say nothing is ever worth fighting for (or against), like monsanto and their frankenfoods schemes, but most things aren’t.

don’t just join others blindly, make your own choices and your own little world.

a wise man once said: “You must be the change you want to see in the world”.

  14. Excellent post. There is a term for what you describe: parasitic consumer.

I may add that a good way to start towards some change and get people to at least start thinking about it more often is through boycotts of companies involved in exploitative activities in other parts of the world.

At the very least if people hear about a boycott they will likely wonder why it is happening and do some research and inform themselves.

  15. This program touches on something that has always really bothered me. We go to other countries and take their resources through economic and political manipulation and often military force. When I complain about this to many people that live here they defend this by saying that we need those resources to live and have to get them when and where ever possible. The truth is we don’t need those resources to live, we need them to live the life style we are accustomed to. That means people live in poverty and threat of death so we can drive SUV’s and Hummers, drink designer coffees every morning, and be home in time to catch American Idol or some other completely pointless dumbed down entertainment on TV. When does it stop? When do we say enoughs enough, our over consumption and refusal to acknowledge the fact that there are other people on this earth that have to live as well has caused too much suffering.

The problem is that when we are about our everyday business of consuming we, myself included, fail to make the connection between the convenience and amount of choice we enjoy and the suffering of some child in some third world country. But the connection is there, and it’s real. Thinking about it doesn’t make it easy to enjoy that mocha latte we buy before jumping into our gas gusler and going off to our advertising job to convince thousands of other people to blindly consume along with us. But its what needs to happen if things are ever going to change. Until Americans realize just how wasteful and pampered we live, we will feel justified in taking whatever resource we need from whom ever has it. Just my two cents, but think about it- it makes sense.

    • You said that right, everyone is responsible and we’ll have to change our ‘Lifestyles” to allow every living being their right to Life and Life to thrive again on this planet again. • I say stop purchasing…realistically, stop purchasing as much as possible. Spend as little money as possible….make your things last…fix them…reuse them…go without. I have made a great effort to purchase as little as possible from these greedy, destructive, unthoughtful, uncaring, insatiable corporations and banks! I am watching every penny I spend and how these purchases affect my fellow loving human beings, my treasured, beautiful Earth and the universe! WE can make a difference in every choice we make!
