Following up on his 2006 documentary, The Most Hated Family in America, Louis Theroux returns to Topeka, Kansas, for a week-long visit with the Westboro Baptist Church.
He again joins the Phelps family on their controversial pickets where they try to antagonise communities with offensive slogans and anti-gay placards. But five years on from Louis’s last visit, there are signs of disarray in the Phelps clan. A series of defections of family members has shaken up the church.

These people say that God is a jealous, vengeful, spiteful God and that is NOT true. Jesus when he walked the earth sat and ate with and talked and walked with liars and thieves and whores and treated them just like any other person. he showed love and compassion to someone who lost a loved one even if that person was gay or a sinner.

I think you aren’t really Christian. You can’t be a Christian if you don’t believe every single word in the Bible. The Westboro Baptist Church is a cult, BUT they are probably the closest you will get to real Christians. They don’t think the Bible is “interpretative” like you people, who pick and choose the things they like, and disregard what they don’t like. They accept every word of it, even the horror and cruelty of it. They are exactly what true, Bible-following Christians look like. Don’t try to fool yourself by thinking that they aren’t doing right by the Bible, if you are really Christian, you should aspire to be like them, because THAT GARBAGE you see them doing, that is what YOUR BIBLE tells you to do! And ask any of them, they will PROVE it to you. That is why the Bible, in its entirety, should NOT be followed. Maybe its actually just about having a relationship with God. Of course what the bible says is true, all of it, but it doesn’t say to go around trying to be offensive and hateful, it says to love your neighbor. God is love. God even loves this bunch of nutters. The way that they are happy that people die and get cancer etc, shouldn’t they be trying to spread the word of God in a way that won’t make people think that all Christians are crazy and hateful? I have to say, I rather have a soft spot for the westboro baptists. They clearly have an excellent sense of humor, and though I disagree with the bulk of their moral values, they mostly seem to be trolling.

As for violence directed at the church, in the first Louis Theroux doc about them, one of their kids got his in the face with a slushy thrown from a passing car. And the guy in this one claims someone wanted to behead his dog. It’s sad that people are so insecure that they need to take it out violently on kids and dogs.

Oh these poor misguided people. As long as they avoid feeling, they will hold on tight to their belief systems, as the opposite to this would mean a dive into their painful humanity, which they cannot afford to do. They have so much invested in hating, that to do otherwise would annihilate them.
