Every ant hill is a secret society, one of millions spread across the globe, for millions of years ant have been transmitting clandestine messages and following invisible trails. Only now are we truly coming to understand them, to crack their secret codes. Bert Holldobler studies miniature cities of ants in his laboratory and he has dedicated his life to uncovering the secret world of these aliens. It is certainly true that up close ants do look alien, they can support 100 times their own weight, stand upside down on glass, consume vast amounts of food and run huge distances. Each ant is a strange and alien force but when they cooperate they become a world superpower.
