David Attenborough takes us to the Jura Mountains, located on the French, Swiss border. At the time of filming the mountains were in the grip of winter, the ground has been frozen solid for months. Here Attenborough is searching for the secrets which lie behind a hidden giant.
Evidence of it’s existance can be seen in the form of strange mounds which are popping out of the ground, it is a sign that beneath his feet lies an incredibly fast network of tunnels and chambers, protected from the cold this network is home to a huge empire of wood ants.
It is believed that this vast network is one of the largest animal societies in the world, where over a billion ants peacefully coexist even though the collection is built of many rival colonies. This peacefully existance breaks many of the rules for both ants and evolution, and raises some very important questions. In this film Attenborough attempts to answer these very questions.
