Russia’s War in Afghanistan

The Soviet war in Afghanistan went on for nine years, starting in December of 1979 and continued until February of 1989. This near decade long war resulted in millions of Afghans fleeing their country, primarily to Pakistan and Iran.  Hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilians were killed in addition to the rebels in the war.
