Over the past few years terrorist organisations have developed not only as performers of attacks but also as story tellers. They seem to employ professional media departments in order to produce a constant flow of propaganda in which the romance of the Islamic brotherhood is ascetically mixed with what can only be described as ultra violence.
These heinous acts committed are often filmed from the first person, rifle in hand as though it were a video game and in the age of social media these commercials for violence have become easily broadcast across the internet.
In this film we see the acclaimed television series Backlight from the Dutch public broadcasting organisation VPRO, bring us an in depth investigation of just how widespread this issue of Cyberjihad is. Through several interviews with counter-terrorism experts we also learn of how critical this aspect of their operation is, in not only spreading fear but also aiding in radicalising many vulnerable young adults who may happen to stumble across such material.
