Dope Sick Love

Dope Sick Love is a really remarkable documentary made for HBO about two pairs of heroin addicted lovers roaming the streets of NYC. There is no narration and we never see any interviews with the subjects, the camera just follows them around, like a third eye, completely detached.

The people being followed don’t even seem aware that they’re being filmed! (or, at least, they don’t seem to care). The footage is amazingly candid. This is as real as it gets. The nuts and bolts of what its like to be on the street and addicted to heroin. We watch them score dope, shoot it, make up, hustle, and even impersonate cops to rob people, and about a million other tiny details that less observant documentary filmmakers would leave out.

Some of the footage is truly horrifying. Like watching one guy frantically searching for the fix he lost. And when he does find it, the guy literally dances in the street.

The cyclical nature of drug addiction becomes very apparent while watching this. EVERYTHING is about getting the next score to these folks, yet the next score seems to be well worth the immense trouble they go through.

  1. How do I register so I can watch it dope sick love

  2. Heroin is an orgasm that lets you feel unstoppable. I started in 1968. I took two seconal and shot a deuce, a 2$ bag of dope and I was in heaven for the next 30 years. Would I do it again. You’re damned right. Heroin mainliners at the time robbed merchandise and never hurt people. There was no need to because two 2$ bags kept you stoned 24 hours. When my Italian family was pushed out of the business by ignorant Columbians and others of there I’ll, people started dying. Italians didn’t want notoriety so they made sure the dole was cut right and maybe 1% people od’d. The latins and blacks were greedy, cut the drug wrong and many people died which she’d a light on the business and the police were afraid to keep protecting the Italian kingpins and so a beautiful era of primo dope with little bad notoriety started to me. Bags weren’t stamped because all dope was athe same. Safe and mellow. 15 bags for 22$ and a bundle o25 for 30$. Oh, what a glorious time!!!. If I could go back, I d start sooner when thee were 50 cent caps. Now with fentanyl and carfentanal it’s a recipe for disaster and people my age, 70, can’t take a chance shooting this. Go back to the quinine cut and all addict seniors would be back for a blast of the past. In 1914 you bought heroin over the counter and bought 2 ampules of morphine and a syringe for one dollar from the sears catalouge. Glorious times. 53 years of mainlining and I’m in perfect health and now have to shoot oxys. Thank God I was a courier for Nickie Barnes in qthe 60’s and skimmed millions and will never run out. Bless Nickie Barnes and the many kilos he gifted me. I wake every morning with a huge shot of heaven and can wish for no more. I travel the world with my wife and my heroin. The war on drugs is a farce. I know at least 50 cops who are rich junky cops Heroin to heaven. There’s no hope without DOPE. Legalize and cartels will be smashed. I have to go now. I have my huge lunchtime shot. Ah, there’s the hit and I m taking off. Sorry for you, you poor suckers who think this will end. 50% of you have junky sons dealing and daughters whoring for it. But damned if it isn’t worth a little pussy to. Sorry, nodded out. Feel bad for you poor ignorant souls afraid two let yoeurselfs go. See your in needle park😋

    • Omg you’re a loser. No one believes your horsesh*t, nor does anyone admire a disgusting shriveled up junkie. You are stupid & DELUDED. Be gone!

  3. Seems like pretty much all players involved in this drama are about towards the end of there careers.

  5. removed! bummer

  6. Sounds like Dublin’s Adam & Paul, great film.

  7. so i don’t understand tracy’s dad. he wants to help tracy and matt but “we can’t do it without your help”. what a load of sh*t. stick them into rehab! not only that, but he also continues to give her $100 a week or whatever which he knows very well is being spent on heroin. my god.

    amazing documentary though. thank-you!

    • I’m willing to bet you don’t have children.

From a neutral point, I understand what you’re saying. Because of our ability to see what she does with the money, we know that it is not helping Tracy and Matt in any way. However, her father doesn’t know this. Call it lazy parenting if you wish but Tracy is a grown woman and her father doesn’t know he’s enabling her. Look at the scene at the video store where her father is convinced that they are both clean and play games instead of get high. He even buys them an apartment in hope that it will provide them the security to get a job. However, little does he know, they’re smoking in the apartment. I’m not trying to make excuses for the man because what he’s doing isn’t helping anyone other than maybe his conscience. However, I truthfully believe, in his heart he does feel like he’s doing the right thing. She’s probably told him how she’s clean now and doesn’t have money because she can’t get a job because she doesn’t have a home address. So he buys her a home. Then she can’t get a job because of her criminal past. So he sends her money. It’s a terrible cycle.

Addiction is certainly a real thing and the documentary was very interesting for the most part. There’s a solid 30 – 45 minutes in the middle that were just the same thing over and over and didn’t need to be there other than to say it’s a full-length feature.

Worth a watch but if you want to skip minutes 30 – 60 you won’t be missing anything.

    • No one can force a person to b clean!! They have to do it bc they want to.. My mom forced me into rehabs, halfway houses, ect.. I played there game, told them what they wanted to hear knowing I was getting high the second I left.. The only way to help is to “not help”… Giving her money is rediculou.. Usually it takes hitting bottom but it happens alot quicker when there’s no money…

  9. fuck everyone saying they arent the scum of society they have the power to say no just like you and i. i dont think these people suffer enough. they deserve everything they fucking get. true wastes of life.

    • I find ur comment truly offensive… Unless u have been in there shoes, like I have, don’t judge… U never know someone’s true walk of life… For all u know it could have been a doctor that first prescribed opiates.. It wasn’t all that long ago that doctors thought oxycotin was the “miracle drug” only to find out now those patients r heroin addicts…

  10. fuck everyone saying they arent the scum of society they have the power to say no just like you and i. i dont think these people suffer enough. they deserve everything they fucking get. true wastes of life.

  11. how did you watch it? the link doesnt work

  12. how did you watch it? the link doesnt work

  13. this is sad to watch :((((

  14. Heroin addiction is not confined to any one section of our society, and not all heroin addicts are homeless vagabonds wandering the streets looking for a way to get the next dose, or lying in an apparently comatose state while high.

  15. “Drugs can make you do some fucked up things, especially when if you dont have them you are sick as hell throwing up all over yourself and shitting your pants for what seems like an eternity.”

Even more of a good reason not to take the crap in the first place..

  16. This documentary seems to be down. Any chance of making it work again?
Thanks for a great site anyway.

  18. These people are the very definition of “scum of society”. Living the junkie dream…

    • Each one of us r an image of God.. It is “thinkers” like u that usually end up w the addicted kids.. Although I don’t wish this upon anyone… I come from a well respected family w money but I still fell quite hard into the drug scene!!! I’ve put them thru so much b4 I got clean… I pray for a nonjudgental world… Having people out there that think this way holds us back from being able to b honest about who I am(and will b the rest of my life)… Just something to think about…

    • have some compassion you never know whats around the corner

    • have some compassion you never know whats around the corner

    • That is really rude to say. That shit is addictive I don’t care what other people say about it. The people that use are NOT “scum of society”. Its dope thats the scum its just sad too see how easy mankind are just easily influenced and addicted to that shit.
