Major Fraud: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

Charles Ingram is a former British Army major who had made headlines worldwide after being convicted of cheating to win the jackpot of one million pounds on the British television gameshow Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

The ITV gameshow produced by Celador and hosted by Chris Tarrant was an extremely popular one which saw many families become obsessed with appearing on it. One such family was the Ingram family which consisted of Charles Ingram, his wife Diana and her brother Adrian Pollock. All three of whom managed to get on the show.

Adrian was first to appear on air and managed to leave with only £32,000, it was then Diana’s turn who also came away with £32,000, but when it came to Charles being on the show in September 2001, things didn’t look too promising after he had used 2 of his lifelines (of which you have 3) getting to just £4,000. At this point the show ended to resume the next day.

Not many people had much faith in Charles getting much further but upon his return the next day he managed shock everyone and went on to win the jackpot of 1 million pounds. However, the payment was later suspended as he was accused of cheating with the aid of his wife and accomplice, Tecwen Whittock.

This is the story of how Charles Ingram went from £4,000 with one lifeline remaining to winning £1,000,000 and how he was found out to be a cheat.
