What factors influence the formation and development of intelligence

What is intelligence? This question has worried scientists and philosophers for centuries. Today, this term is most often understood not just as the ability to quickly count or memorize facts, but as a complex human ability to cognize, learn, think logically, solve problems, and adapt to new situations.
For a long time, there has been a debate about what plays a crucial role in the development of intelligence: nature (genetics) or upbringing (environment). Modern science has come to the conclusion that the truth, as usual, lies somewhere in the middle. Intelligence is the result of a complex and constant interaction of innate inclinations and environmental factors.
The genetic foundation: start-up capital
No one will argue that genetics plays an important role. We inherit from our parents not only the color of our eyes and hair, but also the features of the structure and functioning of the nervous system. Some people naturally have better memory, faster reaction speed, or a penchant for abstract thinking. This is a kind of "start-up capital" that is given at birth.
Studies of twins, including those separated in childhood, show that heredity determines from 40 to 80% of the variations in IQ. However, genes are not a verdict or a guarantee. They determine the potential, but how this potential is realized depends on many other factors.
Early experience and environment: fertile soil
The first years of life are a critically important period for brain development. At this time, neural connections are formed, and how rich and stimulating the environment will be directly affects future cognitive abilities.
Key factors during this period:
Nutrition: a sufficient amount of nutrients, vitamins and trace elements (especially in the mother's diet during pregnancy and the baby in the early years) is necessary for healthy brain development.
- Emotional connection with parents: a sense of security, love and attention stimulate brain development. Chronic stress, on the contrary, suppresses it.
- Sensory stimulation: a variety of toys, sounds, tactile sensations, communication — all this is "food" for the brain, which helps it grow and develop.
A child who grows up in an impoverished environment where they don't talk or play much, even with good genetic resources, may not reach their potential.
Education and training: constant training
If genes are the foundation, and the early environment is the soil, then education and continuous learning are the process of cultivating this garden. Formal education at school and university provides a person with systematic knowledge, teaches him logic, critical thinking and discipline.
But the development of intelligence does not end with graduation. The brain, like muscles, requires constant training. Reading complex books, learning foreign languages, solving non—standard tasks, mastering new skills (for example, playing a musical instrument) - all this creates new neural connections and keeps the brain in good shape throughout life.
Lifestyle: fuel for the mind
Do not forget about the influence of the general lifestyle on cognitive functions. Healthy sleep, regular physical activity, and a balanced diet directly affect brain function. Physical exercise, for example, improves blood supply to the brain and stimulates the production of substances that promote the growth of neurons.
Continuous process
Intelligence is not a static quantity, given once and for all. It is a dynamic system that is formed under the influence of many factors and can develop throughout life.
Genetics gives us certain cards, but how we play them depends on the environment in which we grow up, the education we receive, and the efforts we put into self-development. And in this sense, each person is a sculptor of his own intellect.
