Scientists examined the cerebral cortex under a microscope and counted about fourteen billion cells in it. This is several times more than the population of the entire globe. Anatomists have been studying the location and size of cells for a long time. Pieces were excised from different depths of the crust and over its entire surface. The cortical cells turned out to be stacked in neat layers. There are six such layers. One layer is not like the other. There are very few cells in the first layer. But how many of them are in the second and how huge they are in the fifth layer! The blood vessels in the layers of the cortex lie like meshes. They are also not the same. In some layers they are thin and thick, in others they are wide. The more carefully the bark was examined, the more new things were discovered in its structure. Each of these discoveries was a new step towards unraveling the human brain. The structure of individual areas of the cerebral cortex is different. In some areas, one of the six layers splits into two or even three; in others, one of the layers is missing. Sometimes the number of layers in neighboring areas is the same, but the size of the cells and the density of their processes are not the same. The Brain Institute has compiled a map of the cerebral hemispheres and their cortex. Special machines with sharp knives cut the brain into the thinnest plates. More than thirty thousand of them were made. Each plate was carefully examined for a long time under a microscope. This is how various areas or fields were discovered in the cerebral cortex. There are more than fifty of them. Each field has its own structure of layers, its own size of cells, its own branching and density of processes. In the parietal region, small cells are visible on the slice. They are densely located. In the motor area, cells, on the contrary, rarely sit. And they're big. During operations on the brain, surgeons irritated various parts of it with electricity. The results were different. When, for example, the seventeenth field was irritated, sparks and glowing balls appeared in front of a person's eyes. If the eighteenth or nineteenth fields were touched, colored rings, figures of animals and outlines of objects appeared. The structure of the human and higher animal brains was compared. Some fields turned out to be common: they were found in both humans and higher animals. But they are located in different ways. Humans have fields that no other animal has. These fields are located mainly in the anterior part of the brain: in the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes.
