This day 100 years ago (1st of July 1916) marked what was to become the bloodiest day in British military history; however, that been said there was much more to the Somme than mere senseless slaughter, and in this docu-drama we are presented with a new perspective on the most infamous battle of World War I.

The Somme: From Defeat to Victory challenges the conventional viewpoint of the battle being a disaster and makes the case that it was in fact the Somme that made the British Army learn how to fight modern warfare.

Through much research and digging around British and German archives this film mixes realistic drama scenes with actual footage in order to bring the extraordinary events of the Somme back to life.
