This short documentary by FRONTLINE tells the story of Alonza Thomas who at just 16 years of age was the first minor to be tried as an adult under Prop. 21 in Kern County, California. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 13 years in a super-maximum prison for attempted armed robbery.
The young Thomas had run away from his family home and ended up staying with an older man who he met on the street and who looked after him but once Thomas wanted to leave he was forced into robbing a convenience store in exchange for having stayed in this older mans home. The robbery was botched and Alonza ended up being arrested, this is his story.
Not a lot makes me get upset, but I must say – it’s heartbreaking that they would lock a kid up for 13 years.
