The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell’s Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one.

The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger’s attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened.

  1. The people in the audience are now running companies and the country.

    Think about that.

  2. still on about it then?

  3. The only responsible is the guy that set up the concert.
He sound like a big shot, but you can tell he is no good.
No one in the organization thought about police an ambulance and
    a little taller stage?

  4. Hmm…right…Rolling stones are a bunch of lying fags.
they start a show 3 hrs or so late for a drugged out and rowdy crowd creating a very tensed atmosphere.
They hired the Angels and told them to put their bikes in front of the stage…people are fucking with the bikes…then they find it crazy that the Angels beat some people around for that…and then Meredith Hunter , who`s obviously trippin , at some point comes up in the crowd towards the stage pulling a gun ( it`s all on film ) and gets stabbed ( self defence if it was any other person then an Angel ) and then they go whine whine about it , pointing fingers.
Ain`t saying the Angels are “angels” .. but how clear is it that they been set up for disaster in this case.
Rolling Stones…guilty as charged for murder if you ask me.

    • Are you kidding me? Call them thoughtless or stupid or whatever, I highly doubt they expected or wanted anything like this to happen. Yes, it was a recipe for disaster but when you go out to perform with good intentions this is probably the last thing on your mind. And I may be wrong but wasn’t it their management that hired the Angels, not the Stones themselves? Mistakes were made but no one asked for guns and anger and violence and murder. I think you have zero grounds for calling the band “a bunch of lying f***” (which by the way is missing an ‘s’ or a fourth asterisk).

      • Not to mention the fact that the crowd were *already* ‘drugged out and rowdy’, can you imagine how it would have gone down if they DIDN’T play? People would have been pissed.
