For many people, Nelson Mandela was the greatest human to be alive in their lifetime. Everyone, including the most famous celebrities, wanted to get close to him. So who was Nelson Mandela? Born in South Africa in 1918, Mandela was brought into a world where non-whites were segregated from whites and not given equal rights. Throughout his life Mandela has been strongly involved in the anti-apartheid struggle, fighting for civil rights. Actress Lenora Crichlow has grown up in London and always seen Nelson Mandela as an idol due to the fact that her own father was fighting for equal rights for all races while Mandela was doing the same in South Africa. She sets off to South Africa herself to discover how Mandela brought peace to his country and how it has affected the people who live there.
Mandela was sent to prison for his firm stance against apartheid and unwilling to go against his beliefs, he served 27 years locked up. Finally he was released due to international pressure. Before and during his imprisonment Mandela became a symbol for his people and became famous for his humanitarianism. Once released he continued his fight for equality and finally his efforts paid off when all races were allowed to vote in the 1994 election. Mandela won and became the president of South Africa. Throughout the following years Mandela prevented violence and gained peace for his people. Lenora Crichlow takes us through South Africa and back into the history of Mandela showing us how incredible a human he really was and what he means to so many people around the world.
