During the French occupation, the mines in Morocco were exploited by French companies. One of the conditions for independence in 1956 was that France kept most of its companies active in Morocco. When most of the raw material was exhausted in the eighties, the French companies lefts the workers without income or alternative. Many of them continued their work illegally.
