Into Eternity

Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants is placed in interim storage, which is vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and societal changes. In Finland, the world’s first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock – a huge system of underground tunnels – that must last the entire period the waste remains hazardous: 100,000 years.”
Once the repository waste has been deposited and is full, the facility is to be sealed off and never opened again. Or so we hope, but can we ensure that? And how is it possible to warn our descendants of the deadly waste we left behind? How do we prevent them from thinking they have found the pyramids of our time, mystical burial grounds, hidden treasures? Which languages and signs will they understand? And if they understand, will they respect our instructions? 1. It seems the Onkalo project has serious problems. It’s based on swedish technology, but now the licensing process in Sweden was halted to find out, if the copper cylinders corrode faster than originally thought. The problem was found by an independendt study in Stockholm, and now the results of this study must be confirmed. A swedish-language article about this problem is available here.

  2. nuclear waste is stored in water pools, it will be hazardous to life for at least 100000 years. So for example in 50000 yrs from now humans must still maintain the pools or it releases in the environment. You just know this must end in disaster.

  3. 1 entrance 1 exit? if something happen in the middle of a tunne lwhile they transport nuclear waste? no more entrance no more exit?hmm

  4. well the human race isn’t exactly known for its long term planing capabilities

not too surprising we would make a bunch of waste with no idea how to handle it

  5. I remember watching this one week before Fukushima, makes you wonder.

  6. how the hell are the above related documentaries..

  7. This is an extremely interesting documentary, however it nevers ceases to amaze me how STUPID human beings can be! There is definately something wrong here.

People…dont create the nuclear waste and we wont have to worry about disposing of it. You know the old saying “just because we can, doesnt mean we should”!

    • i think its more complicated then that. we have fossil fuels too but those are also damaging. and wind and solar energy are no where near the level we need to continue the way we are expanding and using energy. its pretty easy to say stop. but i dont forsee many people giving up their computers and electricity.

  8. I’m not a nuclear waste. I won’t be around a hundred thousand years later. Time is a precious resource. I’d be ashamed to waste it watching trucks driving in tunnels and people speaking sloooowly.

  9. Excellent documentary. I really enjoyed it.

  10. An excellent documentary that is existential and philosophical.

  11. Thought provoking with excellent cinematography.
Important to see at least once.

keywords: health physics, radiation safety, nuclear waste, hazardous materials disposal, atomic energy

  12. Any chance of finding this documentary on another video host?

Videoweed sucks so bad, i let it load for 15 minutes on an 8mb/s connection and it only played 32 seconds. really wanna see this.
