Madness In The Fast Lane

In 2008, BBC cameras filmed two Swedish sisters throwing themselves into traffic on the M6. When it was shown on BBC One, nearly 7 million viewers were glued to their screens, and millions more watched it later on YouTube.

The footage was shocking. One previewer wrote “On no account miss this documentary. It opens with what is perhaps the most extraordinary footage I’ve seen on TV”.

But this amazing footage was only part of an even more incredible story, one which could not be told at the time for legal reasons.

Now, two years later, this documentary reveals the full story of the hours just before the cameras captured that motorway footage, and the even more chilling story of what happened over next 72 hours, which left one of the sisters fleeing the scene of a crime, after she had stabbed a man through the chest.

Those who were at the centre of this fascinating legal case, including the police and Crown prosecution service, reveal the complex issues involved in both bringing charges and taking this disturbing case to trial.

A leading criminal psychiatrist, Dr. Nigel Eastman, explains the difficulties the judicial system has in achieving justice and deciding punishment when dealing with mental illness.

An interesting (and bizarre) story. The presentation is more like the sort of reality-based TV show that was being filmed when the events on the M6 were captured. To me, documentary film making is more about insight, or investigative journalism, which this is not – it is really just a reconstruction of events. However, still interesting viewing, if not wholly compelling.

  • Hannah, Norway

I absolutely agree that this is more a reconstruction, rather than a documentary. But it`s still a very watch-worthy and strange piece of work. I never seize to be amazed by humankind…

  • Mr Weaven

The story is completely bizarre and harrowing. The weirdest thing is that there has been no explanation from the sisters as to what they were doing and why!

  • Dee

They sold their souls to the devil and they have immortality in place of sanity.

    Dee

    • Linuswarn

      That sounds extremely plausible!

  • katy

im dying to know what made them run in front of traffic it is so so bizarre.

    • Vincent

Probably for the same reason that Sabina was hitting herself on the head with a hammer.  Suicide attempt.

It’s like they were under somebody else’s control and they hated it.  They knew they were dangerous and they hated it.  Not only did they have no fear of death, they searched it out.

  • Emma

Supposedly it was because of folie a deux, where two people experience the same delusions. I think it bears some similarities to schizophrenia. Definitely some kind of psychosis

  • Tyk

“Supposedly it was because of folie a deux” – no, folie a deux was ONE of the suggested diagnoses.

“Definitely some kind of psychosis” – well thank you Sigmund Freud for that insight. There is no way any of us could have reached that conclusion after wathcing the movie which included the quoted diagnoses of two psychiatrist and the interview with one of the most experienced & respected psychiatrists in the UK.

  • Antoinette

Wow. I am left with so very many questions…. One of which is HOW was Ursula not forced to undergo psychological testing after throwing herself into traffic and resisting arrest? What an odd and compelling story. I want to know more, and I’m left with a particularly unsettling feeling…. like we have not seen the end of this.

  • mystery sea creature

maybe if they told us why they ran into the traffic, we’d all be at it!

    • Ronnie

How extremely insulting to the twins, and to the man who was killed.

      • Reply To Ronnie

Ronnie – fully agree. “mystery sea creature” should be ashamed, although given he / she is very likely an immature teenager they would need to grow up first.

My thoughts exactly. I was begging for the police officers to deck the girl when she could not be subdued. And I apologize for encouraging violence toward someone with a mental illness, it was just frustrating to watch her put so many others in danger and the police to (seemingly) have no means to control her.

First part, at 6:42 she says “I know you are not real”. Freaky. I can’t get the sentence before, maybe that’s not english.

  • Wes

Seemed to me to be a drug induced psychosis, namely jimson weed. Absolutely nuts stuff that grows commonly in the U.S…causes intense hallucinations for multiple days depending on the dosage. Considering the way they were acting, namely making comments like “I know you are not real” and “I need the police” when being held down by police, it would seem they were under some altered view of reality. There certainly are incredible conditions the mind can go through, but if you want one that could make two people act absolutely nuts…jimson weed is it. Plus, I really doubt jimson weed is on their list of drugs to test for, many people have no idea what it is. Scary scary stuff.

  • Dear Wes

There are plenty of conditions which cause “altered view of reality” that are not drug induced.

A non-drug cause was the opinion of two psychiatrists who interviewd the women, and that of one of the UK’s most experienced & respected psychiatrists who later reviwed the case.

All three psychiatrists would be familiar with drug induced psychosis whatever the chemical substance or its origin. The first two made their diagnoses based on interviews with and direct observation of the women. All three of these were highly educated and experienced professionals within the appropriate discipline.

I don’t wish to insult you but as your comment is of low standard of English and contains basely speculation your opinion is of no value.

    • pookie

No one person’s opinion is of greater “value” than anyone else’s. You say you don’t wish to insult him, but all you’re really saying is shut up.

  • Wes

“I don’t wish to insult you but as your comment is of low standard of English and contains basely speculation your opinion is of no value.”

I wrote the comment at 3 in the morning…cut me some slack. The final psychiatrist was making the point that both of the conditions suggested are exceptionally rare, and that in all of his years of study he had seen few correctly diagnosed cases. It’s not like I made the comment to solve the case, it was just a different idea that had yet to be mentioned in the documentary, which left many questions unanswered.

    • Dear Wes

“cut me some slack.” How about you ‘cutting some slack’ towards the three highly qualified & experienced psychiatrists whom have a very detailed understanding of the case, as opposed to one unqualified & inexperienced individual who just watched a short movie.

“The final psychiatrist was making the point that both of the conditions suggested are exceptionally rare, and that in all of his years of study he had seen few correctly diagnosed cases.” So? Despite being very rare both these conditions exist, and each was suggested by a psychiatrist. None of psychiatrists interviewed suggested a drug cause.

“.. it was just a different idea that had yet to be mentioned in the documentary ..” Did you ever wonder why a drug induced condition was not mentioned? One distinct possibility is that it was considered, as would be standard during assessment, and then discounted based on facts & observations.

Baseless, uneducated speculation does no one any service and only indicates a lack of intellegence and understanding on the originator.

      • To “Dear Wes”

Dude – you DO need to give Wes some slack! Just because some “respected” psychs gave a diagnosis doesn’t mean it’s 100% accurate. Personally I don’t buy the “temporary Insanity Shared Psychosis” crap. Something else is going on.

My problem with the WHOLE thing is that the authorities did NOT ever find out what these sisters were up to and why.

…And all you “Alien Hybrid” idiots can forget that theory (although they are quite strange looking).

The bottom line is that Wes’ theory is just as good as any other. Something missing – something still just isn’t right with this case – and I hope it won’t take another dead body to discover exactly what it is!!!

        • To ‘To “Dear Wes”‘

“Dude” no one need give Wes any slack. He is an ignorant, ill-educated moron who thinks his groundless speculation is somehow valid or relvant. He has nothign to base his idea on, and that contrasts to experienced professional who studied the case in detail (inc. some who interviewed the sisters) rather than simply watching a TV documentary.

The “bottom line” is that Wes’ “theory” is just mindless speculation, and your suggestion that it maybe somehow helpful is insulating to the sisters, the man who was killed and his family. Shame on you.

      • Ead

I bet you’re highly educated. Good for you!

  • caja88

the story started out very intriguing. very alien like…..but the more i watched the more human these sisters became. just another person with an illness. almost upsetting really.
in a town not far from me a young man butchered and dismembered a young boy, his mother, and a family friend and shoved their remains in a tree. meanwhile holding the 12 year old sister captive in his basement. she said all she could hear was the constant sounds of a chainsaw and running bath water.
my point is that this shit happens everywhere. always with a meaning.

    • Tristan

This shit does not happen everywhere.

Reading newspapers it may seem so,
but one really needs some numbers
before you can argue that it is common.

Do not ask me for numbers that argue
that it is UNcommon. I do not have them.

Out of 1,564 people convicted for homicide in England and Wales
between April 1996 and April 1999, 164 (10 per cent) were found to have
had symptoms of mental health problems at the time of the offence. [5]
A later study looking at homicides committed between January 1997 and
December 2005 found that the same proportion, 10 per cent (510 of
5,189), were by individuals known to have had mental health problems at
the time of the offence. [6]In 2009, the total population in England and Wales aged 16 or over
was just over 43 million. It has been estimated that about one in six of
the adult population will have a significant mental health problem at
        any one time, [7], [8]
which amounts to more than 7 million people. Given this number and the
50–70 cases of homicide a year involving people known to have a mental
health problem at the time of the murder, [9]
clearly the statistics data do not support the sensationalised media
coverage about the danger that people with mental health problems
present to the community. The majority of violent crimes and homicides are committed by people
who do not have mental health problems. In fact, 95 per cent of
homicides are committed by people who have not been diagnosed with a
mental health problem.[10] Contrary to popular belief, the incidence of homicide committed by
people diagnosed with mental health problems has stayed at a fairly
constant level since the 1990s. [11] The fear of random unprovoked attacks on strangers by people with
mental health problems is unjustified. This has been highlighted by a US finding that patients with psychosis who are living in the community are 14 times more likely to be the victims of a violent crime than to be arrested for such a crime. [12] According to the British Crime Survey, almost half (47 per cent) of
the victims of violent crimes believed that their offender was under the
influence of alcohol and about 17 per cent believed that the offender
was under the influence of drugs. [13] Another survey suggested that about 30 per cent of victims believed that the offender attacked them because
they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In contrast, only
one per cent of victims believed that the violent incident happened
because the offender had a mental illness. [14] People with mental health problems are more dangerous to themselves
than they are to others: 90 per cent of people who die through suicide
in the UK are experiencing mental distress. [15] People with serious mental illness are more likely to be the victim
of a violent crime than the perpetrator. One study found that more than
one in four people with a severe mental illness had been a victim of
crime in one year. [16]It is also worth keeping in mind that many cases of violence in the
community get reported three times – the event, the court case, and the
inquiry report – thus greatly exaggerating the number of cases in the
        public’s mind.

I can’t believe that she jumped off a bridge forty feet and, just broke her ankles, and head injury. They run into traffic, and there is hardly any blood.

I believe MK-Ultra must have gotten to them, or some kind of mind control perhaps in another mental hospital. They may have escaped from somewhere they were being held or, from.

Why now? Will there be more? They had no drugs in them, only the cigarettes she said were poison. Very weird.
I hope I don’t run in to one of these hybrids.

  • Sandesh

Bravo! Congratulations to the team of legal experts, the forensic scientists, psychologists and considerate judge!
And thanks that you are letting out this time bomb out in the society next year.
So apparently, one death wasn´t enough for these people and they want more people to die (brutally murdered) due to these sisters.
First of all, a very valid point is:-
how could you let a woman, who had just attempted suicide thrice on a highway, risked lives of hundreds others and created all the commotion and trouble, go scott free just after a day? When clearly, she was delusional and mentally ill.
The true reason for Glenn´s death is the people mentioned above, and not Sabiner or Sabina. It was police´s duty to keep her under strict supervision for months to come to ensure, she was not a threat to herself and others anymore. Mentally ill and delusional individuals are also very smart in that they fake being normal. Thats what Sabina did! If anything, the forensic experts, psychologists, policemam and judge i.e. all the people pivotal in the immediate release of Sabina Ericsson should be charged for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Secondly, Sabina Ericsson should not be released from custody……..ever!!
She knows where she is going once she is out on parole. Straight to Ursula thats where! The two sisters meet. And Bang! The second big bomb will explode!
So pathetic how despite the fact that an innocent man was brutally stabbed to death, they still would let this woman go and that too so soon!
Lastly, Ursula should be constantly supervised as well because even she is a threat to the society. 2 Years is not a long time.
I wouldn´t trust these psychos with my life even if they didn´t do anything for next 2 decades.

I absolutely agree, if the NHS and mental health services in the midlands had assessed her and detained her under a MH Section for just 3 weeks…. and then even if she was later assessed as no risk and released …. this man would still be alive !

Should not have watched this in the early hours of the morning…scary stuff! The whole thing is disturbing and I feel sorry for the poor man killed, who was just trying to help. I am speculating, but if this had happened somewhere in the US, these two would have not had the chance to run into traffic.

And if they had, they would not have been judged so lightly as these officers judged them.

They would have been subdued. Kinda ridiculous watching this how hands off the police were for so long…

I agree with the doctors that these women were experiencing psychotic episodes. But they should have been seen earlier.
Obviously when they were on the motorway they were a danger both to themselves and others, and should have been sectioned. If they had been, and been diagnosed and treated, that murder would not have taken place.
Shame on society for not adequately treating its mentally ill!

It does not matter what these women were suffering from, what mattered was effective treatment.  In the past, these women would have been treated with bariturates or tranquillisers, not a cure, but an effective treatment, which was noted by the police officers in Sabrinas sudden change while in custody.

Phyciatry and phyciatrists are clearly to blame for this mans death, as they are also to blame for many suicides around the country.  The only thing which makes this incident different is these women survived.  If this woman had been given tranquillisers, the man stabbed in this film would still be alive.

The most respected Phyciatrist in the country says in this that Tranquillisers will not cure her mental illness.  Well, no drug can cure mental illness ever.  The goal of all Phyciatrists should be to find a drug or drugs which effectively controls the condition.  If you have a heart condition, beta-blockers might treat it, they are not going to cure it, same thing with mental illness.

But, Phyciatrists seem to take a different view, in the UK, it is police and paramedics and court systems, which find themselves having to treat people with mental illness, because Phyciatrists are not doing there job.  Phyciatrists seem to think they can have a 20 minute chat with a person who is mentally ill, and they can diagnose this person, unfortunately, events like this which are all too common around the country, clearly show they are failing, and failing miserably.

I dont know how Phyciatrists sleep at night.

Sabina later (After the highway incident) told an officer at the police station, “We say in Sweden that an accident rarely comes alone. Usually at least one more follows – maybe two.”
How the hell would they not question her motives after that???This could have possibly been a mind-control experiment made to be public & documented by media to be sold to the highest bidder! Or to prove that (Eureka! It works!).Or it has to do with parapsychology. Because this is nothing I have ever heard of or imagined.

And the icing on this cake is that she refuses to explain or even say anything, anything at all, about stabbing a guy to death on top everything else that happened. Simply infuriating. It’s like she went “Wow I sure do feel like gutting someone today!”

It’s like she wants it to not make bit of sense and actively goes out of her way to make it so. Just because.

What a bizarre story. What natural phenomena could have possibly resulted in such actions? I find it disappointing that modern science is willing to label this a “puff of madness” without any suggestions to the cause. The fact that it happened in identical twins at the exact same time is only more perplexing. I wonder how close they examined the cigarettes Sabina suggested were poison. The only explanation I can conjure for this behavior is PCP which can be added to tobacco and smoked.

    • Linuswarn

How do you know that modern science has not given suggestions to the cause? How would ancient “science” explain this case?

  • Yo

I don’t buy the whole mental illness crap. Something is definitely off here.

These british cops are pathetic. If that were to happen in the US, the women would likely been shot. You just do not throw a punch at a US officer and not expect to be shot… Hell, if I would had seen that weird shit happening.. I would had shot dead those bitches. Self defense 101.

Too many things are off. Don’t even knwo wher eto begin. I don’t like how the BBC seemed to censor the graphic footage. I wanted to see that blood, that bone sticking out of the leg. I wanted to see the full footage from when the cops arrived on scene to when they left.

So we got one sister (Ursula) that for whatever reason is living in the United States out of all the countries she could live. They are from Sweden traveling to London via bus. Their boyfriend doesn’t know where they are nor does he “care”.  Their bag contained several phones and passport(s).This show SKIPPED a lot of very important parts. Such as interviewing their family, putting together their lives. Where they grew up, where they went to school, who were their friends, who was the “boyfriend”, etc.

The way Sabina hit the female “police officer” isn’t random as well. I do MMA and I instantly recognized it. She hit the female officer with her elbow on the jaw right bellow the temple. Most drug addicts don’t even know that their elbows are amazing weapons. She knew what she was doing. The way she moved her hips as she hit. Also her stance as she crossed the opposite lane. When the male cop was trying to restrain her. That is a fighting stance. Again, it isn’t random.

I’m also very sure that the way Sabina killed that man wasn’t accidental as well. Someone (probably whatever sort of doctor) with knowledge of the human anatomy might be able to better dissect this part of the mystery.

Lots of other things don’t falll into place but I’m going to leave it at that. I would like to solve this mystery… perhaps one day make a documentary of my own a bout it… but for now I have certain things to do.

    • Rorss

yep, punching a police officer should result in being shot…

  • ittlebite

I read a lot of the comments here and I’m sorry but no mental illness will allow the body to sustain such injury and just walk away.  Something real strange going on here.

  • tim

If you look in to this incident and this fallow up
you will find out that there were no drugs found in there blood. They were not
high or drunk. The truth of this is stunning but not unexpected do to the state
of the decline of Christian supremacy in the west. This is a classic case of demonic
    activity.

  • Baz

very strange story, i dont buy the mental illness explanation she seemed sane enough at the police station and sane enough for the unfortunate guy to take her in for the night.

  • Anonymous

It’s funny. I’ve even been institutionalized for one of my psychotic episodes but I feel sane when I read the comments in this thread. MK-Ultra, Demon Possession, Conspiracies…

A psychosis can be triggered by stress or emotional trauma in some people (I myself has been diagnosed with an emotional disturbance since childhood, which probably accounted for the couple of psychotic episodes in my life) and there’s no way of telling how long it will last.
Some of you people seem to think that they are monsters, but they are not, they are simply unwell people that are in need of proper care.

As for what people are capable of during psychotic episodes, I myself broke the armored glass in my cell with my fists after hours of pounding on it because I thought there were people behind the glass observing me and planning to hurt me. Which I might add to the conspiracy theorists, is not possible since the window was actually facing a street. And one of the other “patients” I talked to while incarcerated had carved out one of his own eyes and then crashed his car during an episode.

Good God! this is unbelieveable!..I understand this was extraordinary events for all involved to cope with. but please! I know police see lots of things & idiots & they can get used to treating everything as just another incident, but really…listen to your inner voice .. this was madness from the outset!  They all miss this vital piont. Don’t concentrate on why they are behaving ths way.. its a waste of time, these people with their EXTREME behavIOUR should have been dealt with as extremely dangerous to themselves & others straight away. They should have been restrained firmly & strongly from the start.
Secondly all you normal nice balanced people out there..understand not everyone is. it’s admirable to help someone, but neve take a stranger in, theyre are other ways to help, I’m a 48 yr old woman & i would never got into a house with 2 strange men if i was in trouble, there are other things I could do. I have people  mental illness in my family & I know what they are capable off,…I really feel for everyone involved in this case, especaily the man who died & his family. This country does not know how to deal with dangerous mental health issues. Criminal & dangerous mental behaviour should be treated with the safety of the public in mind, first & formost…these people should be in a secure enviroment!

For over 20 years an organization in ohio has been researching and using an imaging and tracking radar system that can send and detect sound and other frequencies. the operators of this system can talk to someone without other people hearing and they can hear any response. it can tell each person apart and remembers them. it was being used before haarp or gwen were finished. This technology has been kept secret from the public, only a small group of people, including police and doctors knew about it. it has grown. as of 2012 nearly all police, firefighters and medical professionals in columbus, ohio are aware of it. a network of professionals, business owners and most cops in the rest of the state along with atleast part indiana are also aware. some doctors and nurses are in fear for their own safety and that of their families while the police and mental health professionals seem to have been advanced to their position because of their willingness to work with this organization. read dttv.info. china was one of three visits to this site on the first day. the other two were from arizona. the first day of posting someone in china typed dttv.info into their computer. who told china? the second day there were 11 visits from china, 7 from japan, 2 from luxembourg. in the first 7 days there were visits from from 10 countries. all typed in. after 39 days, 35 countries. most of them non english speaking countries. all concerned about whats happening in columbus, ohio.

Eriksson, alongTo be released on the 12-12-12 – A Madness Shared by Two, is
not only the true untold story about the lives of Sabina and Ursula
Eriksson, alongside the murder of Glenn Hollinshead, based on a critique
re-examination of the BBC’s Madness in the Fast Lane
documentary that had 7 million viewers [with a conservative estimate of
around a further 15 million people having since watched this film via
the internet and on websites such as YouTube],glued to their TV screens watching the twin sisters propelling themselves into the fast lane of the oncoming traffic on the
UK’s-M6 motorway, as Ursula manages to throw herself under the wheels
of a 40ft articulated lorry travelling at 60mph, that seems to swallow
her up and spit her lifeless looking body back out of its rear end. It
is also the result of a thorough investigation into what might have
really happened on those fateful days that led up to this tragic slaying
of an innocent man. We challenge the “Official Storyline” and expose what really occurred just hours before M6 dash, for it is here for the first time we expose the Eriksson sisters were “arrested” under the Mental Health Act, though this vital
caught on film evidence was edited out of the original BBC films. This will come as a great surprise to many people who questioned; ‘…how was it possible Sabina could have been released from hospital after only five hours’ following their ‘suicide attempt’ on the
M6? We also reveal that the coroner’s report shows that the injuries inflicted on Glenn, indicate more than one person probably killed him and that Sabina could be
totally innocent. Yet this obvious evidence seems to have been brushed under the carpet, or at the very least, it was never challenged. We explain how these twins were very likely embroiled in a major drugs smuggling ring and that they had been under “Obbo” [police observation] prior to the M6 incident, and was probably so for quite some period of time. As a result of our findings, legal action is now being sought and brought against the police and other related authoritative bodies by the Hollinshead family.

Its amazing the amount of people who still think ‘can’t really explain this with my own knowledge’ and automatically think ‘I know.. Demons.’

I worked in a hospital and you guys would wonder what the human body can endure, also her conditions shows clearly symptoms of mental illness, so please stop these religious/alien trash talk, because it hurts my head when I read that shit!!!

  • winston

Because we have been conditioned to dismiss demon influence and possession, we write off bizarre behavior as mental illness. We will be seeing more bizarre behavior in the near future. It’s not mental illness, it’s demonic.
